CHAPTER THIRTY-FOURJesse’s next investigation began, as they always did, with Weatherly calling him to the city editor’s desk in November of 1975. After nearly three years working together, Jesse and his boss had become quite fond of each other. Weatherly saw his young, hustling-reporter self in Jesse. And Jesse was amazed by how many tricks Weatherly still had up his sleeve. They’d pretty much closed the generation gap, except for the hair-length issue. Weatherly lost the battle, inch by inch, but he still wouldn’t let Jesse grow a beard. The city editor smiled warmly as his protégé approached. Jesse knew that smile.
