Chapter 19: The Siege

397 Words
The building shook as the front entrance alarms blared, red lights cutting through the darkness like warning daggers. Daniel’s sabotage had gone beyond digital attacks—someone had physically breached the headquarters. Amara froze, fear clawing at her chest. “He… he’s here?” The CEO’s gaze was razor-sharp, all control and focus. “Yes. And he won’t stop until he breaks everything I’ve built… or takes you.” Before she could react, a shadow darted across the hallway outside the office. Security rushed past, but it was clear: Daniel had sent someone inside. “Stay behind me,” the CEO commanded, moving between her and the door. His presence was magnetic, overwhelming, protective. Amara’s pulse quickened—not just from fear, but from the closeness, the intensity radiating off him. She swallowed hard. “I… I can help.” “You’re helping by staying alive,” he snapped, then softened slightly, brushing her shoulder with his hand. “Trust me.” The intruder tried the door, forcing it open. The CEO reacted instantly, stepping forward, body blocking hers, hand gripping the intruder’s wrist with inhuman strength. The fight was quick, brutal, controlled—every movement precise. Amara’s heart raced as she watched him. He wasn’t just the ruthless CEO she had seen in meetings—he was fierce, unyielding, and dangerous when someone threatened her. When the intruder finally slumped unconscious, the office fell silent except for their ragged breaths. She looked up at him, cheeks flushed. “You… you risked everything for me.” He didn’t speak at first, simply studying her, eyes dark and intense. “That contract,” he murmured, almost to himself, “was supposed to protect both of us. But it doesn’t account for what I feel now.” Amara’s chest tightened. “Feel?” He stepped closer, their proximity charged, dangerous, electric. “Yes. Feel. And I won’t let anything happen to you—even if it means putting the empire at risk.” Her breath hitched. The legal bond of the contract marriage had once been cold, a formality. Now, in the wake of danger and their shared survival, it was a tether stronger than paper—a tether pulling them into something neither of them could deny. Outside, alarms continued to wail. Inside, the battle lines had shifted—not just for the company, but for their hearts.
