Shadow From The Past

Chapter Eight: Shadows From the Past The door creaked open slowly. Amina stood a few steps behind, her heart pounding so loudly she could barely hear anything else. Every instinct in her body told her to stop him—to pull Daniel back, to lock the door and pretend none of this was happening. But her feet refused to move. Daniel stepped outside. The night air was thick, heavy with tension. The black SUV idled quietly, its headlights casting long shadows across the narrow street. Two men stood beside it, dressed in dark clothing, their expressions unreadable. “A long time, Daniel,” one of them said, his voice calm but cold. Daniel closed the door behind him, shielding Amina from their direct view. “I knew you’d come.” “We always do,” the second man replied. “You’ve been difficult to find.” Amina edged closer to the window, her hands trembling as she peeked through the curtain. She could only see Daniel’s back, but she felt the weight of everything happening outside. “What do you want?” Daniel asked. The first man stepped forward slightly. “The family wants you home.” “I don’t have a home there anymore,” Daniel said firmly. A faint smirk appeared on the man’s face. “That’s not your decision to make.” Silence stretched. Then Daniel spoke again, quieter but stronger. “I’m done. I’m not working for them anymore.” The air shifted instantly. The men exchanged glances. “You don’t walk away from this,” one of them said. “You know that.” “I do,” Daniel replied. “But I’m doing it anyway.” Amina’s breath caught. She could feel the danger rising, thick and suffocating. The first man’s eyes hardened. “And what about the girl?” Daniel’s body stiffened. “She has nothing to do with this,” he said quickly. “Doesn’t she?” the man said, glancing toward the house. “You’ve always had a weakness for things that can be taken from you.” Amina’s heart nearly stopped. Daniel took a step forward, his voice sharp. “Stay away from her.” “Then come with us,” the second man said. “No trouble. No mess.” A long pause followed. Amina pressed her hand against her mouth, fear threatening to swallow her whole. This was it. The moment everything would change. Daniel slowly turned his head, just enough to glance back at the house. At her. Even though she knew he couldn’t see her clearly, it felt like their eyes met. A silent goodbye. A promise. A warning. Then he faced the men again. “I’ll come,” he said. Relief flickered across their faces—but it didn’t reach their eyes. “Good choice,” one of them muttered. They opened the car door. Daniel hesitated for just a second… then got in. The door slammed shut. The engine roared softly. And just like that— They drove away, taking him back into the darkness he tried so hard to escape. Inside the house, Amina stood frozen, tears streaming silently down her face. The past hadn’t just returned. It had taken him with it. And deep down, she knew… This was far from over.
