Chapter Nine: The Waiting Heart
The silence Daniel left behind felt louder than any noise Amina had ever known.
She stood by the window long after the black SUV disappeared, her eyes fixed on the empty road as if staring hard enough could bring him back. The night dragged on slowly, each second stretching into something unbearable.
Her hands trembled as she wrapped her arms around herself.
“Not again…” she whispered, her voice breaking.
Memories began to flood in—the same pain, the same fear, the same emptiness she had once fought so hard to survive. It felt like history was repeating itself, like she was trapped in a cruel cycle she couldn’t escape.
Only this time…
It felt worse.
Because now she knew the truth.
Amina finally pulled herself away from the window and sank onto her bed. Sleep didn’t come. It couldn’t. Her mind was filled with questions she couldn’t answer.
Was he safe?
Would he come back?
Or had she just lost him all over again?
Morning arrived quietly, the soft light creeping through her window like nothing had happened. But everything had changed.
Amina hadn’t moved much. Her eyes were swollen, her body heavy with exhaustion, yet her heart refused to rest.
A sudden knock broke the stillness.
Her heart jumped.
She stood quickly, hope rising before she could stop it.
“Daniel?” she called softly as she approached the door.
No answer.
Just another knock—firmer this time.
Her chest tightened. Something felt wrong.
Slowly, she opened the door.
Standing there was one of the men from the night before.
Her breath caught instantly.
His face was cold, unreadable.
“Amina,” he said, her name sounding unfamiliar on his lips.
Fear crawled through her veins. “Where is Daniel?”
The man didn’t answer her question.
Instead, he stepped slightly closer.
“You need to come with us.”
Her heart dropped.
“What? No—I’m not going anywhere with you,” she said, trying to close the door.
But his hand shot out, stopping it effortlessly.
“You don’t have a choice,” he said calmly.
Panic surged through her.
“Let me go!” she cried, trying to push the door shut.
But within seconds, another man appeared behind him.
Before she could react—
They forced their way inside.
Amina struggled, her voice rising in fear. “Help! Somebody—!”
A hand covered her mouth, cutting her off.
Tears filled her eyes as her strength began to fail against theirs.
This wasn’t just about Daniel anymore.
She had been pulled into his world completely.
And as they dragged her outside toward the waiting car, one terrifying thought echoed in her mind—
If Daniel couldn’t escape them…
What chance did she have?
The car door opened.
And her world went dark.
