Chapter Five: A Dangerous Love
Amina stared at Daniel, her thoughts tangled in confusion and disbelief. The rain had softened outside, but inside her, a storm was just beginning.
“You expect me to believe all this?” she asked, her voice shaking. “That you disappeared for years just to ‘protect’ me?”
Daniel didn’t flinch. “I know how it sounds. But I swear to you, Amina, every word is true.”
She turned away from him, pacing the small room. “Do you even know what you did to me? I thought I wasn’t enough. I thought you found someone better… someone worth staying for.”
“Amina, no,” he said quickly, stepping closer. “There was never anyone else. It has always been you.”
She stopped walking but didn’t turn around. Her hands clenched tightly by her sides.
“Then why come back now?” she asked quietly. “Why risk everything again?”
Daniel exhaled deeply. “Because things have changed. I’m not under their control the way I used to be. I’ve been trying to break free… to build something of my own.”
“And you think it’s safe?” she asked, finally facing him. “You think they’ll just let you go?”
His silence gave him away.
Amina’s heart sank. “So nothing has changed.”
“Not completely,” he admitted. “But I couldn’t stay away anymore. Living without you… it felt like I brief
“You don’t get to come back into my life just because you miss me,” she said. “You don’t get to reopen wounds I spent years trying to heal.”
Daniel nodded slowly. “You’re right. I don’t deserve that chance.”
The honesty in his voice caught her off guard.
“But I’m asking for it anyway,” he continued. “Not because it’s easy… but because what we had wasn’t ordinary. And I still believe it isn’t over.”
Amina felt her defenses weakening, her heart betraying her all over again.
“Love isn’t enough, Daniel,” she whispered.
“Maybe not,” he said gently. “But it’s a start.”
Just then, the sound of a car pulling up outside made Daniel’s expression shift instantly. His body tensed, eyes alert.
Amina noticed. “What is it?”
He moved toward the window slightly, peeking through the curtain.
“They’re here,” he said under his breath.
Her heart skipped. “Who?”
But deep down, she already knew.
The past wasn’t done with them.
And this time… it wasn’t just about broken hearts.
It was about survival.
