Jacob looks at me a grins, his eyes crinkled at the side and his teeth gleaming. "I guess we are not going to have the duel after all. Now that kicking your ass is off the table I will take that thank you for saving your life."
I glare at him and whind up my arm and punch his arm. Hard. "You d**k for brains! What were you thinking healing me in public and then you brought the police to me after I healed after mere hours?"
His face drops and starts to look like I just slapped a child. "What about if the police had wanted to take pictures of the wound and what lame excuse did you give them to not call for medical aid!" He looks more panicked then ever which infuriates me. The man might be a good lawyer, but he could be a stupid vampire.
I punch him in the arm again as he says, " I didnt know what to do. I just knew I had to get you out of there."
I scream as I stand up and punch him again this time in his ear. " Shut up with the excuses and just tell me what happened last night!" I can start to feel my eyes start to glow as they do when I wish to compell the truth. It is a rare skill only harnessed over time and only mastered on command by the oldest among us. The sensation had first been a migraine feeling with a frantic plusating rythem behind my eyes. Now on the rare occasion this odd rythem was less painful and the pluses were waves of thoughts I could vaugely read, they were more high emotions like intense fear. I don't know what color they turn, but only that it caused the person I was looking at to tell there story in detail and fear in their eyes. In Jacob's case he was getting concerned and thought I would murder him. He was getting ready to fight me.
"Alright let's do it then. Fight me while you tell me how you endangered not only me but our species by performing that public stunt!"
He growled at me and followed me out of the board room into a full on battle field with Lucy's papers all over the floor and my uncle on his back with his sister's blade posed at his Adams apple. That did not take Maman long!
Samuel looked disgusted as she stepped away and I walked toward them and specificly the sword in Maman's hands. Maman looks up smiling and toward me and then frowns, " Dear are you alright? Your eyes are glowing silver. I have never seen such a thing!"
" I will be fine, just give me the sword and Jacob will tell me all he knows!" She grins and skips to Lucy's desk chair and sits in it like a happy child would as Samuel just stares at her and stomped away without a word. She smiles and gestures to get on with it as Jacob picks up Samuel's saber off the ground about 10 feet away. I stare intently at him leaning into the pulsing feeling until I feel it in my ears.
He looks frozen as I lunge forward on my right foot and he starts his version of last nights events almost woodenly. "After you left dinner we heard a gunshot and screaming. I came running to the front. Everyone else was taking over under tables, counters, bathrooms and emergency exits. It was a mad house. The manger had already called the police and was on the phone with them hiding behind the host stand."
He sallowed shallowly as I start to circle him and he backs up and turns with me keeping me insight. I growled as he shook his head and tried to break eye contact with me and he groaned. "Why do. I have an awful headache right now. Anita I did not know you were the actual cause of headache only that you are one through your actions," and with that I slice his jeans open at the croch without causing him to bleed. His black boxers are clearly visible and his impression his apendage was attempting to show himself as well. "That was uncalled for! You could have really hurt me!" He starts his offensive by lunging and trying to reach to his full arm length but I block and slam my weapon across his at the hilt and quickly disengage taking his weapon from him as well. I am just a foot from him, inside his gaurd and look him in the eye.
I get close to him and in his face and demand, "Talk! Now!"
He dares to roll his eyes at me as he holds his head as if it is bleeding. "Fine, but Maman needs to get me some pain killers first." I nod and Maman just shugs and goes to do so. "I cut myself on a piece of glass from the store window and took off my shirt. I put my cut next to yours and then my shirt over it. Everyone seemed to believe that I was stopping the bleeding. The cops arrived shortly and you were still bleeding but not nearly enough." Jacob slumped on the floor next to the desk and scubed his face as if he had a long day to. I sit in front of him and he avoids my gaze. " I told them we were engaged and that you were also my client. The cops seemed puzzled that the wound was so small. I told them that I didn't care what they thought, that you needed to see your own doctor. So I called the only person I knew could help, Catherine."
Maman came back and she patted his head, " Yes son you did right to call me. Maman does know best and at least someone in this room knows this." I start to laugh at Jacob's expression of horror at being treated like a child while he shuttered in confused state. She had brought him a glass of milk, some pain killers and a cookie. I found it vastly comical as he sat on the floor with his milk and cookie being patted on the head like a good boy.
He glared at me with the promise of retribution and thanked Maman like the good boy he was.
"She came dressed as a doctor to the restaurant within about 15 minutes just as the paramedics arrived and thank god she did as she was able to convince them to take her to her physicians office who is at the estate as a turned wife of one of our warriors. Dr. Ashley Kilright opened up the office and pretended to be Maman's Nurse Practitioner. The cops wanted to stay and question, but Maman said she was a private doctor and would give them the report after she had saved her patient. The cops have been asking questions all night after dinner, they stayed with your transfer, and keep pushing for answered about our relationship since you woke up."
He put his hands in his hands. I am shocked and Maman is clapping her hands joyously. " Let's make it official anyway. You would make a great couple and you are successful and you always listen to me like any good son in law would."
I was horrified and speechless. There was no way I was even pretending to be marrying a man I saw more as a brother than as a man. Worse Maman would be pushing for this to be real and the whole coven would be pushing once she was fully behind an idea. While I have to admit Jacob dealt with the situation better than I expected he just might have made our lives hell trying to get out of Maman's bigger plan to finally see me wed and with child.
This was worse than I thought could happen. Exposure to government officials and experimentation on me might be better than pretending to the world that me and Jacob were madly in love, about to be married and that he had just saved my life.
I would have to be oh so thankful and leaning on his arm for help like so many women I have seen on films over the years, leaning on their men to save them. Disgusting, I could handle any situation I. my own thank you very much. I don't need a man to complete me. I was the man, woman and business owner over years everyone else leaned on. No this act would kill me to do. It was everything I hated about the expectations of women as weak and defenseless taken right out of the 1800's with sole dependence on their man to protect them.
This was the act Maman and the world were probably expecting of me as the recently targeted and soon to be married woman. I doubt this century was much different than any of the others I lived through when it came to expectations of young women. I would have to pay Jacob back richly for this aggravation.
