Chapter 7: An Offer Refused The harsh morning light streamed into Julian Thorne's office, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air and highlighting the weariness etched on Mary's face. She had spent the previous night tossing and turning, unable to shake off the unsettling feeling that had lingered since she got the text message from her boss the previous day. He had been increasingly erratic in his behavior, consumed by his obsession with the Henderson deal and his growing rivalry with Liam Walker. He had been pushing her harder, demanding more of her time and energy, and she felt like she was constantly walking on eggshells, trying to anticipate his every need and avoid his explosive outbursts. She had also noticed a subtle shift in his demeanor towards her, a fleeting glimpse of something akin to… admiration? Respect? It was unsettling, and she didn't know how to interpret it. She preferred the cold, distant Julian to this new, unpredictable version, which felt even more manipulative. She had arrived at the office early that morning, hoping to get a head start on the day's tasks and avoid a direct confrontation with Julian. But her efforts were in vain. As soon as she had settled into her office, his summons had arrived, curt and demanding. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever lay ahead, and walked down the hall to Julian's office. The door was slightly ajar, and she could hear the low hum of his voice as he spoke on the phone. She hesitated for a moment, wondering if she should knock, but then he abruptly ended the call, and she heard him say, "Come in, Mary." She pushed open the door and stepped inside. Julian was standing by the window, his back to her, his hands clasped behind his back. He was dressed in his usual impeccable attire, a dark tailored suit that exuded power and authority. But there was a tension in his posture, a tightness in his shoulders, that betrayed his inner turmoil. "Good morning, Mr. Thorne," Mary said, her voice carefully neutral. Julian turned to face her, his expression unreadable. "Good morning, Mary," he replied, his voice flat. "I wanted to discuss something with you." Mary's heart sank. She had a feeling she knew where this was going, and she didn't like it one bit. "I've been thinking," Julian continued, his eyes fixed on her, "about our situation with Liam Walker. He's proving to be a more formidable opponent than I initially anticipated." "Yes, sir," Mary replied, cautiously. "I need to find a way to gain an advantage, to get inside his head, to understand his strategy," Julian said, his voice growing more intense. "And I think you might be the key to achieving that." Mary's stomach churned. "I'm not sure I understand, Mr. Thorne," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "I want you to get to know Liam Walker, Mary," Julian said, his voice low and deliberate. "I want you to become his confidante, his friend. I want you to learn everything you can about him, his business dealings, his personal life, his weaknesses. I want you to become my informant." Mary's eyes widened in disbelief. "You're asking me to… spy on him?" she stammered, her voice filled with shock. "I'm asking you to do what's necessary to protect Thorne Industries," Julian retorted, his voice hardening. "This deal is crucial to our success, Mary. And I need you to do your part." "But Mr. Thorne," Mary protested, her voice rising, "I can't do that. It's unethical, it's dishonest, and it's not something I'm comfortable with." "Ethics are a luxury we can't afford in this business, Mary," Julian said, his voice dismissive. "And as for your comfort, that's not my concern. I need you to put aside your personal feelings and do what's best for the company." "But Mr. Thorne," Mary pleaded, "there must be another way. I'm sure Mr. Davies and the M&A team can find a way to outmaneuver Liam Walker without resorting to such tactics." "I've already considered every other option, Mary," Julian said, his voice growing impatient. "This is the only way. You're intelligent, resourceful, and you have a way of connecting with people. You're the perfect person for this task." Mary stood her ground, her eyes fixed on Julian's, her voice firm. "I appreciate your confidence in me, Mr. Thorne," she said, "but I must decline your offer. I am not comfortable with deceiving someone, even if it's for the benefit of the company. It goes against my principles." Julian's face hardened, his eyes narrowing with anger. "You're refusing me?" he asked, his voice dangerously low. "Yes, sir," Mary replied, her voice unwavering. "I am." Julian stared at her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Mary could feel the weight of his gaze, the pressure of his disapproval. She knew that she was risking her job, her livelihood, by defying him, but she couldn't bring herself to compromise her integrity. Finally, Julian broke the silence, his voice cold and dismissive. "Very well, Mary," he said. "If that's your decision, I respect it. All of a sudden he felt the gravity of what he said and how terrible it was. “How am I getting this desperate”?he asked himself, but he wasn't audible enough for her to hear him. He wanted to apologise to her but he doesn't want to show her his weakness. "You may go," Julian said, turning back to the window, dismissing her with a wave of his hand. Mary turned and walked out of his office, her legs trembling. She had stood up to Julian Thorne, and she had survived. But she knew that the battle was far from over. She had made an enemy, and she had a feeling that he wouldn't let this go easily. As she returned to her office, she couldn't shake off the feeling that she had made a terrible mistake. She had jeopardized her career, her financial security, all for the sake of her principles. Was it worth it? She looked around her small office, at the framed photograph of her sister, at the succulent plant, at the hand-painted mug from her mother. These were the things that truly mattered to her, the things that gave her strength and purpose. She couldn't betray her values, not even for Julian Thorne. She sat down at her desk, her hands shaking, and tried to focus on her work. But her mind was racing, filled with anxiety and uncertainty. What would Julian do? Would he fire her? Would he make her life a living hell? She didn't know the answers to these questions, but she knew that she had to be prepared for anything. She had to be strong, resilient, and unwavering in her commitment to her values. She had to prove to Julian Thorne that she was not someone to be underestimated. She took a deep breath, closed her eyes for a moment, and whispered to herself, "I can do this. I can survive this. I am strong, I am resilient, and I will not be broken." She will prove to him that she is a valuable asset to his company with her own skills. She opened her eyes, a new sense of determination hardening her gaze. She had refused Julian Thorne's offer, and she had chosen her own path. Suddenly her phone rang revealing another set of problems she has to deal with ……
