Chapter Five Louella It was eleven o'clock, and we had just finished packing the SUV to head back home. The spa day was just what we girls needed together. Jasper was driving back, so I got in the front. Thirty minutes in, everyone was doing their own thing, whether it was watching a movie on their phone or listening to music. "Louella, do you really need to go back? I know you are here until New Year's, but I miss having you here all the time, and dad is talking about stepping down in a few years, and he has already started giving me more pack duties." Jasper said his eyes were still on the road, but you can hear the longing in his voice of how much he misses having me around. "I do. I am not sure why I feel the need to go back; it could be that I start a new life where no one knows about me and I’m just another person in the crowd. Seven years of living there have become the new normal for me." I said this to Jasper, who was also wondering why I still felt a pull toward Calgary. Dawn, Ally, and I know the city so well that we have seen everything more than once. "Why don’t you come with me for a few weeks when I leave? You can stay with me and we will have a few days before dad comes to help me with the hotel business." I asked Jasper, hoping he would take the offer. He did travel a few times after school, but once the rouge attacks started getting more frequent, he just stayed back to protect everyone like any alpha would. "Let me think about it; let’s just get the ball over and done with, then we can make a plan." Jasper said, sounding a bit better. For the last while, I fell asleep, and somehow, for the first time in months, I had a new dream. The dream started when I saw Jasper standing with his back to me and, next to him, a beautiful woman in a rose-gold knee-length dress with her long dark blond hair falling down her back in waves. I didn’t see her face, but I felt her aura; it was so similar to the black wolf I keep dreaming about, but also not really the same. The aura was powerful and matched perfectly with Jasper’s aura and power. Just as they were about to turn around, Jasper woke me up to tell me we were home. I can’t believe it, and that is why I have been feeling like this about the ball: Jasper is going to find his true mate. I decided to keep my dream to myself, and as I got out of the SUV, I saw everyone running around setting up a big tent and tables for the ball in two days. We unpacked the SUV in a few minutes, and my mom gave everyone a task to do; mine was putting candles in the lanterns that would be placed from the tent to where the cars would stop to make a path. A few packs will be coming that are based here in South Africa; my parents are looking at over two hundred people, give or take. This ball will be the first one in over 18 years, and this will be the first ball my parents will be hosting. So, that means they are going all out for the four alphas that are coming and the royal family. "How was the road trip, my dear?" my dad asked me as he walked in with yet another box of lanterns. "It was great, Daddy. Thank you again for everything. I’m just glad Ally gets to spend two months with us." I said to my dad as he came to stand next to me while packing out the lanterns. "I’m glad you guys enjoyed the trip, and you will always be my baby girl to me. I love you." My dad said that to me, giving me a kiss on the head and walking away with a box of lanterns I had already filled with candles. ***Time Lapse*** "Come on, baby girl, get up. There’s plenty to be done still before everyone gets here at six thirty tonight, and the people you got to help us get ready will be here just after three." My mom, Danika," she said as she pulled the blanket off of me. I turned around and picked up my phone to see that it was only six in the morning. I sighed as I got up. "Mom, why do we need to get up so early? Everything is already perfect just the way it is." I said this to my mom with a sleepy face. "My dear daughter, you know your mother, I will only relax after the ball, and you have two minutes to dress and meet me in the kitchen." My mom said as she kissed me on my cheek and walked out of my room, closing the door behind her. I’m still so tired; we have been running around like headless chickens getting everything done, and I feel like I will need at least a day in bed to just catch up on sleep. As I walked in to the kitchen, everyone yelled, "Happy Birthday, Louella!" I almost dropped my phone; I kind of forgot it was my birthday, which just shows how busy I was the last few days. "I hope you were surprised, my dear." My mom asked me with a smile on her face. "Ooh yes, mom, I have no idea how you guys got the time to remember my birthday, but I’m glad you did. I love all of you." I said. I was holding my phone to my chest, afraid I would really let it fall this time. Everyone hugged me and wished me a happy birthday, and we all had breakfast. Dawn and Dash's parents, Aunt Jada and Uncle Kash, both came to me after breakfast to tell me how proud they are of me. They are like a second set of parents to me and Jasper, seeing that as children we were all between the beta’s living area and the alpha’s living area. I gave them both another hug and walked outside to my spot under my tree. As I was sitting under my tree, I replayed the dreams in my head to try and figure out why my dream of the black wolf and Jasper's mate felt so similar to each other. I closed my eyes, seeing the black wolf with his piercing blue silver eyes that looked right through my soul, and all I wanted to do, for some reason, the goddesses only knew, was to pet him. All of a sudden, I heard Ally’s voice. "I found her, Dawn, sitting there." Ally said as she pointed at me to show Dawn where I was. "Really now, I thought we had covered the fact that this tree has spiders living in it, Louella." Dawn said, crossing her arms and looking annoyed because she has to come get me here again. Dawn loves all animals except for spiders. "You are such a scaredy cat sometimes, Dawn." Ally said this while giving her a playful push. We all started laughing. "So, where am I needed, Ms. Dawn?" I asked dramatically, knowing that the only reason Dawn will ever come to this tree is if she needs me to help with something or if my mom sent her to come get me. "How did you know we needed your help?" Ally was a little surprised that I know them so well. "I guessed, my dear Ally; you see Ms. MacNeill here will never come this close to my tree if it could be avoided." I said it with a bit of dramatic flair as Ally and I started laughing, seeing that Ally already knew all this and was also in the mood to mess with Dawn a bit. "Alright, I think that is enough, you two. What is it, the national mess with Dawn Day or what?" Dawn said, crossing her arms again and being dramatic as always. I got up, and Ally and I grabbed Dawn for a group hug. "You know we love you. You are our drama queen, and for what it is worth, we will be lost without you." I said I was holding them. "I agree; my life is so much better with the two of you in it." Ally said as she kept the hug going. "You are suffocating me. Let go. Aunt Danika is going to kill us if we don’t get back to help finish everything." Dawn said, pushing us off her. We got everything done just in time to take a shower before the makeup artist and hairstylist showed up. They did a great job, and we all laughed a lot, and I can see that my mom and aunt Jada are glad to have all of us in one place, even if they keep saying to us how glad they are that we are grown-ups. They both look beautiful: my aunt Jada in a long black flowy dress with lace shoulders and silver heels, and my mom in a baby blue dress with a sweetheart neckline that has half shoulders and a small black heel. As all of us walked out and down the stairs, the men were waiting for us in their bow-tie suits, looking all handsome. As we walk out of the pack house, you can see the tent with fairy lights, making it look magical from a distance. I linked my arm in to Jasper's arm, and as we walked, I could feel how anxious he was. "Relax, why are you so anxious? You are supposed to have fun on my birthday, baby brother." I said, Look at him, knowing well why he feels so anxious that his mate must be here already or is close. "I'm not sure why I'm feeling this way, and I'm kind of freaking out." Jasper said, looking confused. I just gave him a small smile. We enter the tent, and I love the natural feeling it has, and it helps that the tent is translucent so that when it is completely dark, you will be able to see the stars. My mom and dad left us to go stand at the entrance and start greeting the alphas. "Louella!" I hear a scream and see my baby sister Lana running my way barefoot in a beautiful silver dress with little flowers on the top; we match so beautifully without trying. Her brown hair was nicely done in a curly messy bun with small silver flowers pined in her hair here and there, and like me, her eyes are also the thing that makes her stand out but yet beautiful at the same time. I caught her and turned with her in my arms. I adore her, and despite the fact that I live in Canada, I try to visit Hogsback as often as possible to see my family. "You look beautiful, Lana, but where are your shoes, little missy?" I ask her, giving her a little tickle as I put her back on the floor. "I don’t like them; they make my toes hurt." Lana said she was not impressed with me as she folded her arms. I saw some ribbon on the table, and I got an idea so that when my mom saw Lana without shoes, she would not be too mad. "Let's make you some shoes with ribbon; what do you think?" I ask her, and she looks happy with the results, and just like that, she gives me a hug and runs off to go play with the other kids. I went over to where Jasper was standing and asked him to dance, hoping it would distract him a little bit. "How are you doing after Marcus found his mate, Lou?" Jasper asked me while holding me; he basically is the only one who still calls me Lou. "I am coping; I really loved him and would have made him my chosen mate, but his parents said we are still too young to think like that." I said,I was still a bit sad. I dated Marcus for two years; he is my first love. He is also a wolf shifter in a small pack in Calgary; he is the son of his pack's beta, but he is a Gamma warrior. He found his mate six months ago, after going to a ball in Vancouver; she was a human, and she is beautiful, and they match perfectly together, I must say, but it still hurts like hell losing him, even if I knew he wasn't really mine to begin with. "You will find your mate too, Lou; just give it time. I know how it hurts to love someone you know is not fated to be yours, but I still hold out hope of finding my mate someday." Jasper said, also a bit sad. I know he understands how I feel; he went through the same thing after school with a girl in the neighbouring pack. We finished our dance and went to the bar to get the same drinks when I felt the aura from my dream, and the way everyone else stopped in their tracks tells me they felt it too. The royal family is here.
