Chapter Two

Louella

As we arrived at the pack house and went in, a little girl with long brown hair and golden hazel eyes ran into my arms like Lana always did when she saw me. I looked up at my mom who had light brown hair that was tied up in a messy bun and brown eyes with flashes of green hinted in them. She stood in the middle of the foyer and looked at us with the look I knew all too well. The look I remembered since childhood; the ‘Where the hell have you been?’ look. It was written all over her face and it struck fear in everyone’s hearts who laid their eyes on it.

“Louella Alexa Galloway, where have you been?” Mom said practically yelling as she lifted her eyebrow while she looked at me. “I’m so sorry, Mom. I was at my special spot. I just needed some time alone.” I said hoping that she was not as mad as her expression showed. “Well okay, but I thought you and Dawn wanted to know when the mail comes?” Mom said with that ‘I know something you do not’ look. “So, did it come, Aunt Danika?” Dawn asked excitedly, as I lowered Lana back to the ground. Mom handed us each an envelope. I was pretty sure it was our final results and our diplomas. Dawn and I graduated this year from the University of Calgary in Canada. Dawn was now a qualified veterinarian and I was now a certified psychologist. Ally Tayler, our best friend; was a nurse practitioner. We all were still living together since we started studying aboard.

“What are you waiting for? For Antarctica to melt? Go ahead and open it! I am dying to see your results. Now.” My mom said while clapping her hand together. She looked more excited than we were. “I did great, seeing this year was a pain in my butt,” Dawn said with her hand on her chest as she stood next to me and breathed out a sigh of relief. As I looked down at my final results, I couldn’t believe what I saw. “I passed with a 95% average. I am fourth in my year.” I said with utter shock and stiffly handed the piece of paper over to Mom. “Louella Alexa Galloway, I am so proud of you!” Mom said and grabbed me into a hug. She held on for dear life which made me start to lose oxygen. “Mom, you are suffocating me,” I said as I tried to lessen her grip on me. She stepped back, but her hands were still on my shoulders with tears at the brim of her eyes. “I am just so proud my baby girl did so well in school and to see that all your hard work paid off,” Mom said as she wiped a stray tear away with the side of her hand.

“I am just glad I made it through university, mom. It was pretty much touch-and-go for a moment there.” I said with Dawn agreeing by shaking her head.“Well, I am proud of both of you girls for kicking this final year’s, ass.” Mom said grabbing both of us in a hug this time. She knew all too well that all of us struggled in the house this year. Ally started as a nurse and Dawn and I finished our final year while we worked part-time jobs. Just as I thought of Ally and how we struggled, Dawn’s phone rang. “Hi girl, how are you doing? You’re on speakerphone.” Dawn said as she tapped on the speaker icon and pulled me closer. “Well, let’s just say that I can’t wait to have some time off, seeing I’m starting the 3 January at the new hospital permanently… More importantly, did you guys finally get your results, and, if so, how did it go?” Ally asked, overly excited to hear how our final year went.

“I passed with mostly A’s. I am just glad I am done with this year and I can just concentrate on my animals.” Dawn said with relief laced in her voice. “How about you, Louella, how did you do?” Ally asked me with excitement in her voice. “I got one B and the rest are all A’s, making me fourth in my year.” I told Ally. Clearly still shocked about my results “Damn girl, I would have loved to get those grades in my final year.” Ally said with amazed eminent in her tone. “I’m still a little shocked myself about my results but at least we are all done studying,” I said while Dawn nodded her head in agreement. At that moment I saw Dad next to Mom with Lana in his arms while we all stood in the middle of the foyer. “You both deserve it, you worked your ass off.” Ally said while Dawn nodded in agreement with Ally’s statement along with Mom and Dad. I saw how everyone agreed with what was said, which made me feel good about my results.

“So, are you still coming to Hogsback, right Ally?” Dawn asked. She was so excited she couldn’t contain herself. “Yes, I am coming Dawn. Louella told me that there is a ball on her birthday. By the way happy belated birthday Dawn. Hope you had a great day and just tell your brother that I wish him a happy birthday too.” Ally ensured Dawn with a monotone voice at first but got more excited as she went on. “Thank you, Ally, I will tell him you said happy birthday, but more importantly, when is your flight, and when exactly are you landing here girl? We miss you!” Dawn said with excitement and a longing for our friend in her voice. This would be Ally’s third time in South Africa and living with us at the pack house. My parents loved her, even though she was human. She was a part of our family for the last six years and nothing was going to change that. “My flight lands on the 28 October around 11:30 AM at East London airport. So, it is three days from now. I miss you guys and can’t wait to see everyone again.” Ally said excited about coming to visit us. “So, we can go dress shopping when Ally gets here. Then we can stay a night at a B&B in East London and that will give us time to plan properly.” I said as I looked at Dawn. I knew she would agree because then she could start planning the shopping party and the trip all at once. Dawn lives for planning everything and this occasion would not be any different.

“Yes, sounds good to me but keep us updated Ally and we will do the same. It will be great to see you.” Dawn said ready calculating the schedule for the shopping trip and the B&B in her head. “Okay guys, talk soon. I will email the flight details now. Bye.” Ally said and then the phone went dead. Just as we wanted to walk away, my dad stopped us. “So, this outing sounds like a big group already and I know all of you will go. So, I will let you guys borrow the Honda SUV. It got eight seats and it should be plenty of space for everyone. Oh, and before I forget, my daughter will not go to another B&B. I do not know, so you will all be staying in one of my B&B’s. I will make sure everything is ready by the 28th of October.” Dad said as he looked at me with pride in his eyes. I really loved him so much, no matter if he wasn’t blood, but he was still my father in every way that counts. “Thank you so much, daddy. I love you so much.” I said warmly and gave him one of the bear hugs he would always give me when I was little; the same hugs he now gave to Lana.
