Chapter One

1718 Words
Louella After 6 years of studying and I was finally home for the first time in two years. As I sat under my favorite tree thinking, or more like daydreaming about the past. How long has it been since the last time I was here? It felt like yesterday when I turned 16. The day my life changed when I received the new information in a big envelope. I always knew deep down what I read in this letter was true and it did explain a lot to me. I loved my parents a lot and I knew they would die to protect me. But this letter told me that I was adopted. Yes, on my 16th birthday, I found out that the people that raised me loved me, and taught me everything I know were not my real parents. I learned my biological parents; names were Alexa and Dominic Hughes. My biological father wrote a lot about him and my biological mother. He was a powerful Alpha and my mother was a descendent of the original witch but also part fox shifter. He explained what happened to them, how much he loved me, and how my mother would have loved me just as much, so I should never think they did not want me because they did. At the end of the letter, he said that he hoped that I am loved and safe. I remembered looking up at the people I called Mom and Dad with tears in my eyes. I wanted to ask so many questions, but my mom, Danika, just grabbed me and hugged me while her light brown hair fell over her shoulders. She just held me as my tears streamed down my face. We stayed like that for a long while; I knew at that moment she felt my emotions and was grieving with me. She explained everything and even told me what aunt Malina wrote to her about me. My Mom also told me about the vision her sister had and if ever I wanted to know more about it, she will try and answer my questions as best she could. My mother also told me that when she got me, she knew the only way to keep me safe was to move away from New Orleans. That was how she ended up here in Hogsback. She just felt a pull to this place and when I was three months old, she met my dad, her mate. His name was Jason. He had dark brown hair that almost seems black, with copper brown eyes. He is the Alpha of the Dawn River Pack here in Hogsback. I have always been close to both my dad, Jason, and my mom, Danika. A year after they mated, they had a son, my brother, named Jasper with dark brown hair and hazel green eyes. Even though he was far from a baby now, he still acted like my big brother that always wanted to protect me. We all were very family orientated. We lived in a pack with more or less 32 members and all of us were outcasts. That meant we were not only one supernatural creature, but we all had a wolf spirit, or for some of us, with more than one animal spirit, we connected more with our wolf spirit than our other animal spirit. My brother was the next alpha in line to take over the pack, even though he said he wanted me to take over when Mom and Dad retired. All because I was the oldest, but he knew that it was his birthright. I had my own path to take and to discover where my rightful place was. I told him that I would stand by his side when the time came, no matter what. He also knew I was adopted but after all this time we all still loved one another like family. We also had a new addition to our family about seven years ago. My baby sister, Lana, had the most adorable golden hazel eyes and long brown hair with bits of black. Jasper and I were so excited when we found out my mom was having a baby girl after 19 years of trying after Jasper. Baby girls and twins were scarce among wolf shifters. All of a sudden, I was knocked out of my daydream when I heard one of my best friends shouting at me, bringing me back to reality. As she walked over to me, I came into focus with her auburn hair with slight curls that forms her face nicely. She wore a blue shirt and black jean shorts. The outfit complimented her blush-tanned skin and icy blue eyes beautifully. She knew exactly what she was doing with her outfit today, I thought. “Why do I always find you under this tree? You know spiders live in there, right?” Dawn said in one breath before she took in some air. She was mostly panting as she stood still, but we will say it was from the walk up the hill that left her out of breath. “Hello to you too, my dear Dawn. Why are you being so dramatic today?” I asked her in the same dramatic tone Dawn used, knowing well it would annoy the living daylights out of her. “Very funny Louella. Do you like making fun of me? But you know our birthday s***h graduation party is in a week and our parents turned it into a ball, seeing that the Royal Family is also coming on your birthday.” Dawn said annoyed, with much success of my attempt. She did not like to share our birthday parties. The twins and I always celebrated our birthdays together, seeing that Dawn and her twin brother Dash are on the 10th of October and I am on the 31st of October. Our parents thought it was more convenient “Oh come on, Dawn. We are 25 and graduated early. There is no need to worry about the little things. All we need to worry about is getting Ally here before the ball and receiving our diplomas without a scratch on them.” I said to Dawn in hopes that she would calm down about our party being replaced by a ball for some of the Royal Family. “I see you are already putting your psychology degree to work, but I am not worried about the party; I’m more worried about what the hell we are going to wear, silly.” Dawn said as she started to laugh and all I could do was laugh with her over all the drama about what to wear. “So, you want to go shopping for dresses, don’t you?” I asked Dawn as I tried very hard to keep a straight face after our giggle fit. “Yes, you know me so well, but I was thinking we take Lia with she needs to get out a bit. , Dawn said. Lia was Dawn’s sister-in-law. Lia and Dash mated about five years ago, after seeing each other for the first time in town. That happened when he just turned 20. It was like fate because they first met each other in grade 7. Usually after grade 7, all the kids in the pack were home-schooled. The two of them married about a year and a half after they completed the mating ritual. Lately, Dash was on edge and wouldn’t let Dawn take Lia out somewhere without him because we found out Lia was five months pregnant. “So, I just want to make sure that you know your brother will not allow Lia to come with us if he can’t tag along, right?” I said to Dawn. “Well, I figured as much. I’m pretty sure your brother is going to come with us.” Dawn said pulling her face knowing that if Dash came, Jasper would want to come as well. The two of them were close friends. To be honest, we all were. There was not one memory that did not have all of us together. Jasper and Dash were best friends and Dash would become Jasper’s Beta when he took over as Alpha. Dash was the first out of the four of us who met his true mate and now that he completed the mating ritual, giving Lia, her wolf soul and the ability to shift. A lot of other power that comes along with being a wolf shifter. Over the last five years Lia became a great friend to Dawn, Ally, and me. “So, we will need to go in two cars, we are not five years old anymore,” I said trying very hard to control my laughter. Dawn just started to laugh with me because she also remembered how awful we were when our parents took all of us out on road trips. “Come on Louella, we have a lot to do, seeing as we are five people now. I really want time to pack an overnight bag that is not just clothes that I had to grab and throw in my bag.” Dawn said as she helped me up from where I was sitting. I was barely up on my feet when she started pulling me in the direction of the Pack House. The direction change almost made me trip but luckily my other foot stopped that from happening. The Pack House looked huge from the outside, but it started as a 4-bedroom house, but as the pack grew, so did the house. With each mated couple there would be a small house built for their family. My family and I stayed in the original 4-bedroom house, seeing that my dad and mom are the Alpha and Luna of the pack. The Beta houses were built on the right side of the main house and all the rest were built from there. It was quite a sight to see, but for me, the house resembled just how strong we are as a pack because we all helped build it. My dad owned a construction company and some B&Bs all over South Africa, so we were ‘financially stable’ as my dad would put it.
