She hasn’t left yet.
She doesn’t know what’s waiting.
But she feels it.
This chapter is the silence before the scream. Her last fragile moment of believing she still has time.

Chapter Eighteen: The Storm That Didn’t Break
Athena couldn’t sleep.
She lay on the roof of the east barracks, watching the clouds crawl across the sky. The stars were there—but faint, like they were holding their breath.
She tried to reach out again.
Tried.
The bond used to be like fire. Like warmth running under her ribs. A hum in the chest. Steady. Unspoken. Like a heartbeat not her own.
Now, it was a thread dipped in ice. Faint. Brittle. Fading.
She pressed two fingers to her sternum.
“Nyt,” she whispered.
No answer.
No echo.
Just a stillness that didn’t belong to either of them.
The door below creaked open. She didn’t look.
Zara’s voice floated up. “You’re not going to sleep, are you?”
“No.”
A pause. “You always sleep better when he’s near.”
Athena didn’t reply.
Zara climbed up beside her, pulling her coat tighter. “I know you’re planning something.”
“I’m going after him,” Athena said. “In the morning. Alone.”
Zara blinked. “You should take a team.”
“If it’s nothing, I don’t want to panic the pack. If it’s something—”
She stopped. Let the words settle.
“If it’s something,” she said quietly, “I need to see it before anyone else does.”
Zara nodded.
They sat in silence after that, the wind tugging at their hair, the stars shifting overhead.
Athena felt it again.
That ache in the place where he should be. The way her body tensed before a fall. The part of her soul that never learned how to exist without his weight beside it.
She whispered his name one more time.
And thought—just for a second—she felt him reach back.
Not a voice. Not a word.
Just a flicker. A breath. A pulse of heat like an ember under snow.
Her throat caught.
She didn’t smile.
She didn’t cry.
She just closed her eyes.
And listened.
