The idea was hard to hold in his head. It wasn’t that it was unbelievable, he’d seen too much to apply the word. Especially when it came to the terrible things people were willing to do to one another. What made it difficult to accept was the inevitability. They were going to die. That in itself wasn’t shocking. Any military career held risks and none more so than one in the LSS. He’d accepted the theory of his death a long time ago. This was different though. This was real. Faced with the prospect of his imminent demise, Dalton found he was far less comfortable with the idea. Doctor Ardley’s graphic description of how it would happen wasn’t helping either. The man was still watching at him as if anything Dalton could do or say next would be as bad as the end their future already held.
