AFTER WE FINISHED our lunch, Alessandro excused himself to make a telephone call. He returned to the boardroom a few minutes later and said, “Elena Bissoli will be here in half an hour.”
“I hope I’m not disrupting her day,” I said.
“She doesn’t mind; she needs the money.”
“Is there a computer she can use?”
“She can use the desk at which she normally works.”
“While I’m waiting, I would like to make copies of some of the pages in this ledger.”
“Help yourself. The machine is turned on, and it’s easy to use. Looking at the size of that ledger, I think you may want to use the largest size paper; there’s plenty of it in the cabinet underneath the copier.”
“Thank you.”
