MARCO AND I CELEBRATED the arrival of the New Year with a party. Luciano and Izzy came to spend a long weekend with us, and we invited Andreas and Nick to join us on New Year’s Eve. We still hadn’t gotten around to meeting other couples in the Duchy; we spent so much time running back and forth to Conti and Siena that we tended to stay home when we were back in Aragoni. When the bells of the city began to ring at midnight, Marco stood and raised his Champagne glass.
“A toast to the New Year,” he said, “and to the changes in our lives that it will bring.”
After everyone had taken a sip, Luciano took the bait, and said, “Changes in whose lives?”
“Dani’s and mine actually.”
“What kind of changes?”
“A major one for the two of us. Sometime in late April
