MARCO AND I MADE good time the next morning, and arrived at Marco Polo Airport on the outskirts of Venice a couple of hours before noon. We went to the rental car booth to turn our car in and were met there by an older man wearing a suit. He was accompanied by a porter.
“Dr. d’Argenzio and Dr. Rosati?” he said.
“That would be us,” Marco said. “I’m Marco d’Argenzio, and this is Danilo Rosati.”
“My name is Paolo. I have worked for il Duca for many years. The porter will take your bags to the boat.”
“The boat?” Marco said.
“The most efficient way to get to Venice is by boat.”
“Yes, of course.”
