“DISAPPEARED?” I SAID. “How? When?”
“One of my people drove them into the village to attend Mass—remember, I told you at Christmas that we were doing that?”
“Yes, I remember.”
“When they didn’t return, I sent someone to look for them. The car was found abandoned beside the road, but there was no sign of the passengers. Your mother, Florence, and the driver are missing.”
“Have you called the police?”
“Yes, I have.”
“Good. I’m going to call my friend at the American Embassy in Rome; he has a friend who is high up in the ranks of the Carabinieri. Then I’m going to call Sal in Siena and ask him to come out and stay with you for a few days.”
“Sal is the man who drives your car when you visit, yes?”
