{Aurora's POV}
I have been in a hospital once, but never in a police station.
There was a row of desks, and on top of every single one of them were piles of paperwork scattered along with untouched coffees. In front of those desks were people, typing on their computers if not on the phone. Cops and civilians passed here and there, seemingly too focused on their own dilemma to observe their surroundings. It was enough to tell me that this has been their everyday scenario for a long time now.
An overwhelming sensation hit me.
The place was in total chaos. Instead of going to the other person, they would scream what they have to say, and all the noises would blend together. It was excruciatingly painful to witness.
I looked around like a lost puppy trying to find her way home. All I know is that the officer who called me was Mr. Smith, but other than that, I don't know anything else.
Where am I supposed to look for him here?
Swallowing the nerves in my system, I approached someone who looked like the youngest person here. Probably an intern.
"Excuse me." I hesitated, but when he looked up and raised a brow, I continued. "Where can I find Officer Smith?"
His brows relaxed, and he pointed to someone behind me.
"That's him."
I turned around and saw a middle-aged man talking to another officer from the counter.
"Uh, thanks." Then, I approached the person who asked me to go here in the middle of the night. "Officer Smith?"
Two eyes stared at me. Both in question.
"I'm here for Lucas Saunders. You called me?"
His questioning eyes glinted with recognition.
Now, his attention was completely away from the other officer from the counter and solely on me.
"Mrs. Saunders?" He looked at me from head to toe as if he wasn't expecting what he saw... whatever it was. I didn't bother asking.
I bit my bottom lip.
"Where is...my husband?"
He sighed and shook his head as if all the exhaustion suddenly came crashing back to him, and it was all because of Lucas.
He led me to a hallway leading to the opposite side, away from the chaos of that part of the station.
"I apologize for making you come all the way here in the middle of the night. It's just that your husband didn't want his parents to know, so I figured you'd be the only person I could call."
That's understandable. As the golden boy of his family, of course he'd be too scared to let his parents know. But on the other hand, Officer Smith knows that my in-laws weren't just anyone, so of course, someone really needs to come here.
"What happened?" I said to get to the point.
"Your husband physically assaulted someone. In fact, it wasn't the first time that he'd been reported for that same reason. He's quite the cause of trouble in certain parts of the club around here, which you are not aware of, I suppose." Sympathy and disappointment for my husband's actions were reflected in his eyes. It was as if he thought this revelation was new. If only he knew.
I looked down and let out a sigh.
Lucas had physically assaulted multiple people? That doesn't sound like him.
Officer Smith and I talked as I asked him all the things I have to do to settle Lucas' mess. Thankfully, they were quick to process everything since all I had to do was pay for the damages, and then Lucas was free to go.
I watched as Officer Smith unlocked Lucas's jail cell and gave him a warning look, which the latter just disregarded.
He walked past me to retrieve his things at the counter.
I scoffed in disbelief.
Not bothering to give him another look, I turn to leave without waiting for him.
I have no interest in asking anything about what he did. For all I know, it was because of another one of his mistresses being groped again, and he'd just acted all recklessly because of it.
Before I could fully turn my body, I felt something hard slamming against me.
A gasp escaped my lips.
Strands of hair fell in front of my face because of the impact, and I almost failed to steady myself.
My eyes fell on the man's shoes, then up to his expensive Rolex, all the way to his Adam's apple, and then...
Green eyes withdrawn from any emotions stared down at me. But wait, is that a bruise I was seeing on his cheekbones?
My eyes widened.
Kael
His name almost escaped my lips. It almost felt natural, but thankfully, I managed to control myself before anything got out of hand.
"I—" I blinked, unsure of what to do. "I'm sorry—"
"Mr. Russo!" Someone called not too far from us.
Kael's cold gaze flew past me as if I was nothing but an insignificant person that's not even worth being stared at. And then he walked past me without even a word.
I was left with my lips slightly parted from my failed attempt to apologize.
Something similar to shame and hurt punched me in the gut as I looked at the people giving me pitiful glances. The look they gave to someone who had been rejected.
I blinked.
Is he for real?
"He really came to the station himself, huh?"
I heard Lucas grumbling to himself on our way back. He was staring out the window as our driver drove us home while I sat quietly, still shocked by what happened earlier.
I could understand Kael's indifference towards me since I basically rejected him three years ago, but what can I do? Have an affair with him just like what Lucas was doing? I was attracted to him, but I wouldn't do something like that.
"That arrogant b@stard really wanted to show off."
Huh?
My head whipped to the person sitting next to me.
"And why is that your concern now, Lucas?" I couldn't help but ask. He just got out of jail for goodness sake, and he's more concerned about Kael showing up at the station?
He messed his hair in frustration. "I punched that @sshole. I guess now he's taking legal action since he knows that I could easily bail myself out. That fvcktard is taking a single punch to the court."
The car didn't stop, but somehow, my heart did.
"What?" The whisper barely escaped my lips.
He punched Kael? Was that the reason why Officer Smith had to call me? He knows that the one who complained wasn't just any person? And the bruise on Kael's face—as that because of Lucas?
Gosh, Lucas, when did you become this stup/d?
I massaged my temple.
This is such a big mess, meaning I have to deal with my parents again. I don't know what I'd have to do this time for the sake of helping the 'family.'
"Why did you even do it?" I whispered after some time. We've been together for three years, and almost every decision he made had been thought through and through. Aside from his infidelity, of course. "That doesn't sound like you."
I felt his stare from the corner of my eyes, but I didn't dare look back.
There's no point anyway.
"Lucas, have you gone mad?!" My mother-in-law hysterically looks at her son. Pearls dangle on her ears and neck like a mermaid wannabe. "Of all the people you could mess with, you chose Kael Russo?!"
"I raised you to be wise, Lucas, not stupid." Anger coated his father's words. No one dared to speak afterwards.
We were in Lucas's office at their family's company. My parents were still on the way, so it was only the four of us.
Lucas had a bruise on his cheeks after receiving his father's punch. His eyes were glued to the letter he received exactly at six in the morning. It was from Kael's lawyer, stating all the issues he was about to face.
It seemed like Kael dug deeper than any of the Saunders' enemies had ever done. If it was just about the punch, his parents would have reacted differently. For sure this is about something more.
Just when his mother was about to speak again, the door opened, revealing my parents.
I suppress a grimace. I could already feel my impending headache, all thanks to my husband.
"Lucas, why did you do it?" My mother asked, strumming her newly polished nails against the table.
We are all seated now. Thankfully, my in-laws have calmed down, but the scorching anger they were suppressing could still be felt from where I sat.
Lucas found my gaze. He didn't glare which was kind of unusual. In fact, his eyes were devoid of anything as if there's a mystery he's trying to keep to himself.
He finally looked away, his jaw clenched. "He pissed me off."
"That's your reason?! You're going to sabotage everything we have just because Russo pissed you off?!" His father was back to being hysterical while my father was trying to calm him down before he punched Lucas again.
I looked down at my lap, suddenly feeling the urge to vanish, away from their heavy presence.
There was a lawyer with us as well as Lucas's secretary. I pity them because they have to carry all the burden this family faces even though they are being paid for it.
"I already sent Mr. Russo's lawyer our apologies and proposition. Hopefully, he responds and chooses to do this the kind way, but knowing him, let's all prepare for the worst. Considering he took this the legal way, this was the kindest he could be."
Multiple sighs could be heard in the room after hearing Lucas's lawyer. His mother looked like she was about to cry while my father-in-law massaged his temple in frustration.
Glancing to my side, I noticed that my parents had grown silent. Their eyes were on each other. A silent communication. I looked away before either of them noticed me.
The meeting adjourned. I was taken home by our driver while Lucas stayed in the company, anxiously waiting for Kael's team's response—if they would ever give him one.
I sat on the stool, making myself a tea after taking a shower. I still couldn't shrug off this weird feeling in my gut. My parents...they were on to something. They were a bunch of jerks, but loyalty is everything to them. As funny as it may sound, but betraying someone they treat as an ally wasn't in their nature. They wouldn't turn their backs on my in-laws, especially now. But they are also not the type of people to give their help until nothing's left to them, so it's unlikely that they'd plot something against Kael of all people. He would strip them bare if the rumors were right. And they are too scared for that.
What were they up to now?
Two days after the meeting, Lucas summoned us again, but this time, it was just the six of us. He and I and our parents. No lawyer. No secretary. We weren't in the company either, just here in our house. None of us knew the reason why until he dropped the news that shocked us to the core, especially me.
"He messaged back. Not his lawyer. Russo himself." Lucas was carrying a dark expression on his face. His eyes unfocused, probably from recalling Kael's response. "He would drop everything, and all the damages would be paid." He meant every investor that pulled out from the company because of the issue as well as his public image that had affected the business.
"That's good. What does he want then? A public apology? A private one? Give it to him, Lucas, before he changes his mind." I look at his mother, who seemed relieved more than anyone.
A vein in Lucas's forehead ticked. "He doesn't want my apology." Then his eyes found mine, ignoring the questions thrown at him. "He wanted Aurora."
