Andrew walked in moments after Arthur had stormed out of the house. I was shaking and crying. I hated the fact that he still had a huge effect on me. Andrew cupped my face in his palms and wiped my tears with his thumb. “Did he hurt you?”
Yes, he did. He has. In so many ways. But I knew exactly what Andrew meant, so I shook my head. He pulled me into a hug and stroked my hair gently while I cried my eyes out.
“How did he find you? He is not supposed to know where you live.” Andrew said when we both sat in my dining area.
“I don’t know. He has his ways, I guess.”
“I am sorry. I thought this place would be safe enough.” Andrew said apologetically, but I shook my head.
“It is not your fault.” I squeezed his hand and he smiled.
“Maybe we could get you to a better and safer place. I would not want him to harm you in any way.”
“Trust me, that won’t be necessary. If he wanted to, he’d still find me.” I tucked a lock of hair behind my hair and rested my chin on my palm.
“What did he want?”
Tears filled my eyes again while I shrugged. “To vent? He blames me for everything going wrong now. I don’t know Andrew…did I make a mistake? Leaving him?”
“No, you didn’t. You did the right thing. You were unhappy, Darlene,” he said with a sad face.
“Yeah, but… things are much worse now.”
“They’ll get better. It is just a matter of time.”
I chose to believe him. I had decided then that I would call my mother or text her at least. We had found a way to communicate without my father’s knowledge. I needed to know how bad things were back at home. After generations of marriage between my family and the Walkers, our divorce would be the talk of the whole town. And of course, I would have to suffer the consequences. Arthur would too.
Andrew stared intently at me now. His green eyes studied me affectionately. He took my hand in his and stroked my skin tenderly.
“I have come to care so much about you, Darlene.”
We held our gaze for a moment longer, then he leaned in and kissed me softly. I let myself fall into his embrace. I could feel my worries and fears fade away. I was at peace. We stopped and held each other with our eyes closed. He drew back and planted a kiss on my forehead.
“I know you have a lot going on, but I want to be here for you. Please, let me.”
I nodded and smiled. He was handsome. I had always known, but it mattered more now. He held both of my hands in his and kissed them before he gave me a gorgeous smile.
“Are you good?”
“Yes, I am,” I replied with a smile.
“I will need to return to the office…I can stay if you want me to.”
“No, I will be fine.”
“I will be back tonight to make sure you’re good.”
He was out of the house in no time and I was left alone to ponder on everything that had occurred just that morning. Arthur had traced me to an apartment on the other side of town, but most importantly, Andrew kissed me. I smiled as hope enveloped my heart. Maybe, I could be happy now. A part of me was scared. I wasn’t sure if I was ready for a step like that.
When I checked the time, it was 11 am. I sat down at my desk to get some writing done. Now that I wasn't married to Arthur, I had the freedom to do whatever the hell I wanted. I loved to write and paint, but he had discouraged any attempt at it. I’d usually hide to paint and whenever he found out he would throw the painting away in the middle of the night.
I opened my email first and scrolled down until I saw an unusual email from a strange account. I opened it and froze as I read the words on the screen.
“There is blood on your hands!”
My heart raced against my chest and my whole body trembled. I would have ignored it if I had not just been on trial for murder and assault. I was tempted to respond, but I knew better than that. Who was behind this? I couldn’t think of anyone. Was this the Walker's way of getting back at me for breaking tradition?
My head started to spin. I didn’t need any more drama. I wanted a normal life. A simple normal life. I wished I could call Arthur to talk to him about this, like when we were younger, but that was impossible. He was probably behind this. Plus, he is my sworn enemy now. He hated me and I almost felt the same way. Almost.
I thought about calling Andrew, but I shook my head and decided to wait until he showed up later that night.
“There is blood on your hands!” I read it over and over again until my eyes started to hurt. A deep sigh escaped my lips. I began to pace back and forth in the small room as I struggled to pull myself together.
I heard a beep from my phone. I had thought it was the same person responsible for the mail that somehow managed to get my new number, but it was my mom.
“Dear, how are you? Oh! I have missed you so much. Your father is fighting for you, but it is not going well. They are trying to find a way around the agreement. We should see soon. I will explain better in person. There is so much you need to know. I will find a way to come to you. Please stay safe.”
Tears filled my eyes. I missed her too. I was glad to know my dad was fighting for me. Only God knows what he is protecting me from. As much as I wished to be back home to help my father, I had my fight to handle. I had been framed and now, I was being stalked. I wish it was all over, but it seemed like it had just begun.
