Chapter One

Kat POV I shot up in bed from the nightmare. Who were these people I dreamt about? The blood and gore of it all made me sick to my stomach so I laid back down in my bed. Sweat clung to my body. Dozing back off only to wake again hours later with the sound of my dad calling out to me. "Kat! You're going to be late for your first day!" I stirred from my sleep as I heard him yell "I won't tell you again!!" I got out of bed and stomped over to the door. "I heard you the first time! I wish you'd stop treating me like a damn child!" It was as if my dad flew up the stairs because next thing I knew he was rushing through the door and what happened next shocked the hell out of me. His hand connected with my face as he yelled out,"Who the hell do you think your talking to?! I am your father dammit and you will respect me in my house you got that!?" With tears in my eyes I looked up at him and yelled back. "Do you honestly believe you striking me is going to make me respect you?! It doesn't work that way dad! You taught me that!" I tried to sit up and my father growled and reached out to help me up but I smacked his hand away. "You know what Kat?" my father John says after letting out a sigh, "I don't know where this attitude is coming from or when it even started but you need to change it." "Are you kidding me dad? You don't know where this attitude is coming from?! How about its coming from me being pissed that every time we settle somewhere and I start to make friends, you decide to uproot us to some place new!! You have done this for as long as I can remember dad and you never explain to me why we-" My father cuts me off and says, "Explain!? I don't have to explain myself to you Katherine! You are 17 years old! I am your father and what I say goes! Can't you just trust that I'm doing this for your own good?" "And all the training? What of that, huh? Fine, you don't want to explain to me why we move all over the God forsaken globe then at least explain to me why you have me training the way you do? Everywhere we go, you train me as if we are going into battle and I don't understand. Trust you? You were the one who taught me not to trust anyone dad. That trust is earned. I have done everything you have ever asked of me without question. Now, I just want to know why." "I can't. Just know its for your own protection." Dad walks over to me and stops short. "I'll see you after school for training. Get a rush on it or you'll be late for school." My dad turns to walk out and says before leaving the room, "You have to be patient with me. I don't know how to raise a young lady. That was something meant for your mom, but she isn't here and I'm sorry for that. One day I'll be able to explain." Then, he turned and left. I was left there with all my unanswered questions. So I grabbed my clothes and jumped in the shower to wash away my morning and the nightmare I had. Twenty minutes later, I was ready and walking downstairs and out the door to head to school. Luckily it was only three blocks from where I lived and the walk would do me some good. I arrived at Lincoln High school just in time for the first bell to ring. I wandered the halls in search of the attendance office. As I rounded the corner I bumped right into someone which knocked me on my ass. As I laid on the floor flat on my back there were some students near by laughing at my embarrassing moment. A growl escaped me as I tried to sit up. "Damn. I'm so sorry! You came around the corner so quick I didn't see you!" The guy that knocked me down was muscular. When he bent down to help me up he looked directly at me. He had me stunned. His eyes were an icy blue color, and he had jet black hair. It didn't help that when he smiled he had a dimple on his right cheek. Everything about him was perfect. He reached out a hand and I grabbed it as he pulled me up. I winced as i felt pain in the back of my head. But something took my mind off the pain instantly. It was the feeling of electricity coursing through my hand at his touch. I looked up at him and he stared at me with wide eyes. "My mate." He muttered. "Excuse me?" I asked in confusion. The boy next to us cleared his throat. "Uh Chris, we gotta go man." It was as if he was in a trance because he shook his head and said, "Yeah. Yeah okay let's go. I'm sorry if I hurt you." "No, uh I'm fine. Thank you." "Okay, I'll see you." The boy whose name was Chris smiled and ran down the hall and out of the school with his friend. Leaving me standing in the hall alone, dizzy and confused. After snapping out of it, I walked until I found the main office. As I entered the door, I saw everyone busy answering phones, and passing papers around rushing in and out. I approached the office clerk and cleared my throat. Looking up, the clerk smiled and said, "Hi! My name is Nadine. Is there something I can help you with?" "Uh, hi Nadine. My name is Katherine Lawson and today is my first day." "Oh! Ms. Lawson. Yes, your father did call and say you would be coming in. I have your schedule right here." Nadine gives me my schedule, a map of the school and writes me a pass to class. After I thank the woman I turn and head out. I found my class fairly quick thanks to the map. As I walked in the teacher at the head of the class, as well as her students, stop and look at me. I walk in quickly and hand her the slip. "I'm sorry I'm late. First day." "Its okay Ms. Lawson just as long as it doesn't become a habit. My name is Mrs. Ruelle and welcome to AP English. Class, this is Katherine Lawson our new student. Ms. Lawson please find an empty seat." I thank Mrs. Ruelle and found a seat at the back of the class. A girl sitting next to me whispered, "Hi, I'm Valerie. I'm new too, well a week ago new but still new." "Hi. Kat. It's nice to meet you." "I take it you don't like your name?" Valerie asks me with an arched brow. "Not really. No. I've just always grew up with my dad calling me Kat. He calls me Katherine when he's really cross with me." I say, remembering this morning when my dad called me Katherine for the first time in a long time. "Noted. Sit with me at lunch? I can introduce you to the other ladies I met. Being the new girl sucks." Valerie gave me her cell number which I entered into my phone. I agreed to lunch and turned forward to pay attention to the lecture. At least trying. All I could think about was the blue eyed boy and the feeling that something strange was happening to me. To my body. I've had boyfriends before, of course they didn't last long because I moved before they got too serious. But this was different. It was like he zapped something inside me. Awoke something that idled there, waiting to be released.
