“This is such a bloody mess!” I exclaim, throwing my hands up. After a few seconds I feel somewhat saner, “Have you ever met someone like me before?”
“No. I keep a relatively low profile.”
“What changed?”
“I grew tired of innocent creatures dying. They didn’t ask to be what they are, they are just surviving. I had to try and do something but when I met you everything changed.”
Oh wow! Focus Jessica. “So the real reason you wanted to kiss me is to stop me from doing what I’m supposed to be doing?”
“Yes.”
“So do it now.” The words are out of my mouth before I can stop them but honestly whatever this is I don’t really want any part of it.
“No. There is still somebody out there trying to kill you. You might need your gift to survive.”
I open my mouth to tell him that whoever it is can go and screw themselves, Jared puts his hand over my mouth and points to his ear with his free hand. I nod that I understand to keep quiet. He walks over to the front door and I follow. What now?
He stands in front of the door and then suddenly opens it, “What are you doing here?”
“Get the hell out of my way!” Dean yells pushing past Jared. I back away from him as he walks my way. His features soften when he is near me, “Jess, don’t be afraid. What lies has he told you?”
“He didn’t lie to me! Not like all of you had!” I jump to Jared’s defense.
“Let me explain. I will tell you everything you want to know but we can’t stay here.” He says reaching for me.
I dodge his hand, “I’m not going anywhere with you.” I say louder than needed.
“Don’t do this.” He says. It feels like a warning.
“Leave Dean.” I say surprising myself yet again by the steadiness of my voice. I feel stronger.
“You heard the lady. Get out.” Jared grins.
Deans stands motionless for a moment looking at Jared. I sense trouble so I move in next to Jared. I really hope that there won’t be any. Dean looks from me to Jared then turns and walks back to the door.
Before he leaves he turns back, “Find me when you realize that he is dangerous. We are all so worried about you.”
Jared slams the door shut and turns to me, “The sun is going to be up soon. I need to leave here. Let me call someone to stay with you.” He pulls out his phone.
“Can’t I just go with you?” I ask. I haven’t known him that long but I feel safe with him.
“It’s not a five star hotel.”
“I don’t mind.”
“Okay.” He agrees then takes my hand. I wonder if he knows how cold he is. He leads me out the back of the cabin I see a small shed well hidden. He opens the door and I take it in, he kicks a shovel out of the way never letting my hand go, “Come on in.” He smiles and pulls the latch open. I let go of his hand feeling my body warm up. I climb down the ladder and when I reach the bottom I scan the room, there is a big bed in the middle of the room along with a mini fridge and a television with a couple of DVDs stacked on it
When Jared gets down he asks, “Not what you expected?”
“Not even close but I like it.” I admit. I’m not sure what I expected maybe a little dark hole in the ground.
“Really?” He looks surprised.
“Just because my parents are rich snobs, you think I am the same?” I ask tilting my head slightly.
“Well that will teach me not to judge.” He shakes his head.
“Most people do.” I shrug.
“You keep calling me a person, but I’m not, haven’t been for long time.”
“As far as I’m concerned you are.” I smile and walk over to the television.
“So one bed…” Jared starts.
“What’s the big deal, you sleep on one side and I will sleep on the other side.” I say cutting him off.
“I don’t know if I will be able to sleep with you next to me.” He says softly but I heard him.
“Still scared that I might kill you?” I ask but I know that’s not why I can read his body language.
“That’s not it.” He replies walking over to me. My heart starts beating faster. He walks past to the mini fridge. I am truly disappointed. He offers me a beer buy I shake my head.
The thought of sharing a bed with him is driving my hormones crazy. I am attracted to him, I’ve never been this attracted to anyone. Ever. I walk over to the bed and sit down on the edge to take my boots off. He comes over and pulls the covers back’ I get in and curl up watching him walk back to the fridge. Is he going to stay there the whole time?
I can’t keep my eyes open anymore. I'm exhausted and I allow myself to give in.
