I watch Michael slowly walking towards me but then turns his head to the window. I can’t make out his expression. It all happens in slow motion, he starts running but it is too late. I have already opened the door, a shot fires and I fall to the ground. I back away from the door pushing with my feet, like a backwards crab. Micheal kicks the door shut and kneels over me as I lay flat on my back, “Are you okay?” He asks as he unzips my jacket and looks over me. I want to cry.
“My shoulder hurts.” I say biting my lip to fight back the tears.
“Which side?” He asks concerned.
“Left.” I stutter.
Michael takes my jacket off and I see the blood. Micheal relaxes after looking at the wound. “The bullet just grazed you, let me get a towel.”
He gets up from the floor and goes into the kitchen, when he comes back I am already sitting up against the couch holding my shoulder with my jacket to try and stop the throbbing.
“You’re lucky.” He says relieved.
“Yeah.’ I mumble. For the first time I can remember I’m glad I live in such a big house we’re about five meters away from the front door with at least three walls between us and whoever took that shot.
Michael helps me up and says, “Jess, I almost lost you. I don’t know what I would do if anything happens to you.”
I can’t find my words. A few minutes ago I was pissed at everyone now I am just glad to be alive. I feel dizzy when I stand up and nearly collapse if not for Michael holding me up.
“You really need to stop being this knight in shining armor; it makes it so hard for me to be mad at you.”
“I’m sorry; I didn't mean to upset you.”
I punch him in the gut and say, “Really?”
“What did I do now?” He chuckles.
“You just can’t help but be a gentleman.” I say rolling my eyes.
“Let’s go upstairs so I can clean your wound.”
“Fine.” I say refusing his help; I walk to the guest bathroom. Once inside I allow him to clean the wound and put on a bandage from the small first aid kit under the sink that I pointed out.
“Jess, I need to ask you something.” Michael says cautiously.
“I am fine, even if I burst out into tears it wouldn’t change what has happened so all I can do is suck it up until someone tells me what the hell is going on.”
I jump off the counter and go into my bedroom to change my shirt and get another jacket when I come downstairs Michael says, “Whoever it was is gone now, it is safe to go outside.”
Michael opens the car door for me and I get in he does the same, on the way back to his house the air is icy, I don’t want to bring up a question that would likely go unanswered. When the car stops I jump out before he can open the door for me.
We walk up to the front door when suddenly Michael puts his arm out in front of me to block me, the door is slightly ajar and I sense something is not right, I push past him and run into the house calling out Melissa’s name but get no answer.
I reach the bedroom closely followed by Michael and I gasp, “What happened here?”
Michael squeezes past me and finds a note on the bed where Melissa is supposed to be sleeping; he reads the note out loud, “If you ever want to see your sister again, bring the girl to the Hog bar at 6pm.”
“Oh no!” I cried out.
“I will get her back.” Michael says.
“You’re not going alone.” I say.
“You have to stay safe.”
“She is my best friend and I’m going to help get her back.” I stay more as a statement.
Micheal nods a few seconds later, “Why haven’t you suggested that we call the police?”
“I may not know exactly what is happening at the moment but I do know that the police can’t help us.”
“I should have never left her alone here; I didn’t think that they would come after her.”
“We are going to find her.” I say more to myself.
“These people are dangerous, I don’t want you to get hurt, they have already tried killing you twice and I don’t want to give them another chance.”
“Who is driving? You or me?” I ask. I’m terrified for what can happen to Melissa. I'm scared that some weirdo is trying to kill me but I cannot let myself break down. I have to make sure that my best friend is okay. Micheal’s words echo in my head, ‘twice’. What did I do and to who?
“It’s still early; we have to wait for Dean.”
“The sooner we get there the more time we have to look around and hopefully find her, besides Dean is not allowed to go outside during the day.” I say walking to the door.
“What do you know about Dean, Jess?” He asks concerned and a little scared sitting down on his bed.
“I know what he is even though it doesn’t make any sense but then again I might also be going crazy.”
“You’re not crazy. Trust me.”
“I used to.” I say before I can stop myself and I feel like s**t for saying it. This is not the time to bring this issue up. We need to find Melissa.
“I’m sorry.” Michael says and my heart breaks.
“We can talk after we find her.” I reply. I have to be strong if I break down I know I’ll never recover.
Michael gets up then freeze, I probably have a weird look on my face. I walk over to him and put my palms on either side of his face, what in the holy hell? I want to scream out loud.
“Now things make a little more sense.” I say removing my hands but he gently takes wrists placing them back on either side of his face then puts his hands on mine, “Please don’t be scared I wanted to tell you so many times but I couldn’t.”
“I’m not scared, Michael.” I whisper. I’m terrified. Is this my life now? I step away from him and he walks over to one of his drawers and takes out a shotgun then stuffs some shells into his jacket pocket.
“What are you planning on doing with that?” I ask nervously. I don’t like guns.
“Just a little extra protection.” Michael says.
I’m getting more worried. A vampire and a werewolf! What else am I going to encounter…
