The truck sat dead in the middle of nowhere. There were dark trees on both sides and no lights except the ones getting closer behind us. David was already out, popping the hood. I climbed down, my feet screaming. The towel around my left foot was soaked through with blood. "Battery's fine," David muttered, staring at the engine like he could fix it with his mind. "Maybe it's the fuel line cause something's cut." "Cut?" I whispered. He looked at me over the hood. His face was pale in the dim glow of the truck's interior light. "Yeah, cut...like someone wanted us stuck." The headlights behind us were closer now, maybe a quarter mile. "We need to get off this road," I said. "No argument there." David slammed the hood. "Grab what you can. We go into the trees." I grabbed my backpack. D
