“Mary, you were out late last night,” Dorian looked up from his cup of tea and newspaper as Mary entered the kitchen to grab a piece of bread. He raised a suspicious eyebrow at her while she began to smear cream cheese. “What were you up to?” “I was just scoping the area, checking out the local vamp scene,” she innocently replied before taking a bite and keeping the bread by her mouth as she moved on to pour herself some coffee. Beside Dorian, also holding a cup of tea and a newspaper, Clarissa looked up from her glasses and added, “I heard there was a bit of a scuffle last night,” as if she was implying something. Mary took out the bread from her mouth, swallowed, then shot them both an exasperated look. “I swear, that wasn’t me,” she sighed. “I was busy partying with some cute boys. Ask around if you want to.” She took a seat next to Chiara, who had only been watching them quietly with an amused smile on her face. “I hope we didn’t bring trouble into the island,” Clarissa worriedly told Dorian. “I doubt it’s us, Clarissa. We have been very careful and discrete,” Dorian said with surety and pride, making Mary scoff and almost choke on her coffee. “You call your four-layered clothing yesterday discrete? Mr. D, please,” she teased. Dorian cleared his throat and straightened his newspaper, obviously having no rebuttal for that. “That is why I have decided to stay in today and continue on the painting for my study,” he muttered mostly to himself. “Wisest decision you’ve made so far!” Mary proudly exclaimed as finished the last of her bread. “While you’re busy being old and lame here with Clarissa, Chiara and I are going to go out and have some girl time,” she announced excitedly. “Are you sure it’s safe?” Clarissa sternly asked. “I already scouted the place last night and Mr. D’s guys are down there as well,” Mary informed her, then with a small smile, added, “Let’s not even mention how the heat yesterday almost made Mr. D swoon.” “I did not swoon,” Dorian was quick to try and defend himself. “You were cutting it very close,” Chiara said with a playful shrug. “Anyway, the point is we’ll be alright,” Mary cut in as she stood. “We’re just going to swim and explore around.” “You have to call at the first sign of trouble, are we clear?” Dorian asked, pointing a finger at her. “Yes, yes,” Mary moaned in response. “Miss Chiara Baker will be safe and sound and we’ll come running back as soon as we see a fully clothed pale man trying to approach us. Have some faith, Mr. D, we’re in a tropical island and I’ve got my weapons with me. Don’t worry too much or you’ll age.” She sweetly smiled at Dorian as she patted his shoulder when she passed by. “Alright, I’m just going to go, uh, get some drinks for the road. Chiara, let’s go in ten?” “Yeah, sure, let me just pack a small bag,” Chiara nodded as she stood while Mary made her way to the walk-in pantry. “You sure you two will be okay?” Mary could overhear a worried Dorian asking Chiara. She took a quick glance outside just to double-check that no one was looking in her direction as she grabbed a small insulated bag. “Of course,” she saw Chiara nod and give Dorian an assuring smile as she gently touched his hand. With no eyes on her, Mary quickly opened the small freezer by the corner, careful not to make too much noise as she grabbed a pack of blood and placed it in the bag.
