Chapter 3: Reunion

756 Words
Shu He broke the protein bar into small pieces and fed them to the kitten. The little orange cat ate hungrily. As the weather grew colder, it had no place to shelter and no one to feed it. After this meal, it was unsure when the next one would come. Shu He looked at the palm-sized little orange cat. She noticed that its left eye was swollen from a beating and could barely open. She picked it up and headed to the hospital. The little orange cat panicked and flailed about, howling. "Don't be afraid." She opened the car door, took out a few tissues and laid them on the seat, then placed the little orange cat on it. The little orange cat jumped out of the car in fear. Since no one trimmed the claws of stray cats, its claws were quite sharp. In its attempt to escape, it accidentally scratched Shu He's hand, and blood beads welled up instantly on the wound. The little orange cat turned its head. One of its eyes was watery and trembling in the rain. Seemingly aware that it had scratched her hand, it still fled for its life. Shu He gasped in pain. She turned around to look for the cat, but the sight was dim, with withered maple leaves scattered all over the ground. The little orange cat was gone. It was feared that it wouldn't survive this cold rain. Her umbrella was blown towards the railing by the cliff. Shu He was about to step forward to pick it up, worried that it would be blown off the cliff by the rising wind. Suddenly, her wrist was grasped by a pair of strong hands. Shu He immediately turned around. A large black straight-handled umbrella appeared above her head. She looked up and saw a tall and noble man holding the umbrella. Their eyes met. In the rain, a gentle breeze blew. His eyes were like lustrous obsidian, deep and profound in the misty twilight. Time seemed to stand still. Shi Yu stared at the girl's face. After a moment, he released her wrist first and said softly, "Don't bother with the old umbrella. This new one is for you." As he spoke, the man's slender fingers offered the umbrella to Shu He. "Thank you." Shu He came to her senses. The umbrella was heavy and of excellent workmanship. The man had already left. A dark gray Cayenne was parked five meters away. The faint scent of cedar on the man seemed to still linger around her. Shi Yu opened the car door. Just before getting in, he turned around. The night gradually became more enchanting, and the sycamore leaves were still floating in the rain. The two of them looked at each other from a distance, as if time slowed down in this quiet and long gaze. "The road is slippery in the rain. Don't get close to the cliff edge, and don't look for that cat anymore. It's with me." "Okay." Shu He smiled. No wonder the little orange cat was missing. He had saved it. She thought the man looked familiar, but she couldn't remember where she had seen him. Hearing him carefully remind her, "Your hand is bleeding. Remember to go to the hospital for an injection." "Thank you." "Do you need a ride to the hospital?" Shu He shook her head, not daring to get into a stranger's car. "No, do we know each other?" "We kind of do. We'll meet again soon." The man left this sentence and got into the car. Shu He's cashmere coat was completely soaked. She stood there quietly, tightly gripping his black straight-handled umbrella, watching the Cayenne slowly drive past her. Pain came from her hand. Shu He opened the car door, folded the umbrella, sat in the driver's seat, and sighed at her mess. She took off her wet scarf. She started the car. The windshield wipers rhythmically swept the rain off the windshield. Shu He gently stepped on the gas pedal and left the resort. Glancing at her hand, with two bloodstains from the stray cat's scratch, she knew she had to go to the hospital to get vaccinated as soon as possible. The man said they kind of knew each other. But Shu He racked her brains and still couldn't figure out who he was. Judging from his noble and refined demeanor, calm and serious manner, he seemed like an educated and cultivated intellectual. Could he be a young professor at the university?
