It was only eleven when Alex got back to his apartment, but the day seemed over already. There was nothing left he wanted to do. He felt drained and exhausted, and he thought he should at least go into the station for the afternoon, but he just didn’t feel up to it. So he dropped his keys on the coffee table as he passed through the living room and kicked off his shoes before heading upstairs. In his room he didn’t bother to cut on the light, just shucked off his jeans and tugged his shirt off over his head, dropping the clothes to the floor as he crawled between the cool sheets. Maybe I can just sleep the rest of my life away, he thought, staring at the ceiling. Suddenly the room around him was gray, the world drained of color.
