Chapter Two

Amber's hands held tightly to the soft fabric of her dress as she sat still perplexed in the back of the black Maybach, her heart beating through her chest visibly. The street lights blurred past the tinted glass, casting gold and silver patterns against the leather interior. She still couldn't fathom what was happening. Few moments ago, she was in her father's office, trying hard to understand the weight of this demand. The next moment, she was led into a car, her destiny sealed by a phone call from a man she had never met before. Viktor Morales. Her breathing became irregular at the thought of him. She had heard about him, definitely. Everyone had. He was that kind of man everyone feared and yet liked in equal measure—a young billionaire who had built a conglomerate with brutal accuracy, leaving behind desolate competitors in his wake. And now for reasons that are beyond her thoughts, he wanted her. Amber looked to the man seated in the passenger seat—her mute escort. He briefly introduced himself as Aurelio when she was ushered into the car. Dressed in a black tuxedo, his aura and demeanor made it obvious that he wasn't just a driver. He was a bodyguard, a man who was loyal to Viktor Morales. She gulped hard and faced the window, in a conscious effort to ignore the way Aurelio’s presence made her stomach whirl with discomfort. What does he want me to do when I meet him? She had spent the whole ride trying to predict Viktor's agenda, but every thought made her more uncomfortable than the former. Would he ask for total submission? Would he want her to act the role of a loving wife in public while he left her out of his real affairs in private? Would he touch her? A fright ran through her. No. She could not think about that right now. Amber adjusted in her seat, her hands clasped together in her lap. “How farther is it?” she asked, bewildered by how sturdy her voice was. Aurelio tilted his head a little bit, showing her regard with undecipherable eyes. “Not much farther” His response sent a jolt of disgust through her. She breathed deeply, calming herself down. “And where are we going to be precise?” A pause. Then— “To meet your soon to be husband.” Amber’s stomach rumbled at the word. Husband. It sounded awkward, so completely far from reality. The car braked slowly, Amber’s heart skipped a beat as she turned to look outside. They were entering the premises of a towering skyscraper, its glass covering reflecting the city like a daydream. The building stood out from everything around it, an unmistakable and assuredly intensional show of power. Her jaw tightened. This was it! Aurelio stepped out first, moving with an accuracy that made her remember a well trained soldier. He opened the door, gently gesturing for her to step out. For a split second, Amber thought of staying inside, locking the doors and refusing to step out. But what would she achieve with that? She breathed sharply as she stepped out, her shoes clicking softly against the marble pavement. The atmosphere was crisp here, cooler and oddly soothing to her skin. Aurelio led her to the entrance without saying another word, his presence both reassuring and a silent warning. Amber’s pulse pounded as they entered the walkway. The whole place wreaked of wealth—gray marble floors reflecting the rays from the chandeliers, the scent of expensive perfumes and fresh roses in the air. People moved briskly, most dressed officially in tailored suits and expensive designers, their communications low, their gazes quick. No one spared more than a millisecond of a glance. As though a lady being walked into the den of a lion was very common here. Aurelio took her to a private elevator, pressed a button and the doors slid open with a kind of eerie feeling of doom. She was hesitant. This was it. There was no going back now! Trying to compose herself, she stepped inside. Aurelio followed, pressing the button for the top floor. The elevator took off smoothly. With each passing floor, her nerves stretched and her heart beat faster. She exhaled slowly, trying to comfort herself . “He’s just a man,” she whispered under her breath. A man to whom she now belonged to for the next two years. Then the doors slid open. She stepped out into a big office space, losing her breath at the magnificence. New York’s skyline was visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows, sunlight peeking through them, casting a glow on a part of the office. And then she saw him. The Don of Hell's kitchen stood by the window, his tense broad shoulders, with one hand in his pocket and the other holding a glass of liquor. Huge. Towering. Undecipherable. His aura filled the room in a way that made Amber unable to breath. Then he slowly turned towards her. His blue eyes locked onto hers. The deepness of them sent a shudder down her spine. For a split second, none of them spoke. Then, his deep voice broke the silence. “You’re finally here.” Amber gulped hard, struggling to meet his gaze. “I didn’t have another choice, did I?” His lips formed into a smirk. “Of course, you didn’t.” A slurry, intentional pause. Then— “You are mine now.” She lost her breath. Aurelio moved past her, the elevator doors closing after him. She was now alone with Viktor Morales. And there was no way out!
