Chapter 1: Seraph POV I hear heavy pounding on the door waking me up from my restless sleep. I open my eyes the sunlight streaming in from the windows irritating them causing me to wince as my head begins throbbing. “Get up you lazy b***h you need to make breakfast I’m hungry!” “You could just make it yourself like the grown-ass man you are” I mutter under my breath rolling my eyes. I glance at the clock on my nightstand seeing I overslept by an hour I attempt to quickly rise from my bed but I trip over my sheets and land with a heavy thud on the hardwood flooring making me whimper from the pain of landing on my bruises from last night’s beating. I take a deep breath and hold taking a minute to compartmentalize my pain as I have been for the last ten years. Taking care to rise slowly I walk toward my dresser to pull on a faded t-shirt, an oversized sweatshirt, and an old pair of faded naturally ripped jeans not the stylish ones from American Eagle or Abercrombie. I rush out of my room hopping down the hall still pulling my second-hand doc martins on. I walk to the kitchen to quickly throw some eggs and bacon on the stove for my father. My stomach rumbles at the smell wafting through the house but I’ll just have to deal with the hunger pains until lunch because I am not allowed to eat food in the house. I know my father is going to beat me today after school for delaying his breakfast and being late for school. I carry his plate to the dining table where he waits for me and place his food in front of him. I try to make a quick exit but he clamps down on my arm pulling me toward and backhands me causing me to stumble back and fall to the floor for the second time this morning. I land on my tailbone and suck in a sharp breath and hold it not wanting to give him the satisfaction of seeing my pain. “Don’t get up late again and make sure to be home on time no dilly-dallying at school. No one would want to talk to you anyway, you’re pathetic.” With a blank face, I stand up and calmly walk towards the door exiting before I call him out for being the pathetic one beating on his daughter because his weak mind couldn’t handle losing his wife. I start my 5-mile walk to school since I’m forbidden from riding the bus and I don’t have a car. I’m 17 and my 18th birthday is tomorrow May 30. I live in The Red Waters Pack and have since I was born. As a wolf shifter, the Moon Goddess blesses each of us with a wolf and a mate on our 18th birthday. I’m excited to meet my wolf tomorrow and have a permanent companion. I am nervous about meeting my mate and fear he is not going to look beyond my outward appearance. My mother always told me about the connection of mates and its magic the first time they meet I hope this is true for me as well. I finally arrived in front of my school in time for the second period, math. I walk through the halls with my head lowered hood up and my long pin-straight medium brown locks. I am suddenly pushed from my side into the locker and have to bite my bottom lip to the point of drawing blood in order to stop myself from crying out in pain. I look up to see who the culprit was and it was none other than Brett Karrigan the future Beta of the pack he’s backed by some of the football players and the future Alpha, Clay who does nothing but stare blankly at what is being done to me. This pack will be run by immature selfish assholes soon and I look forward to seeing how much damage they do. Brett and company start laughing at me. “Watch where you’re going, peasant.” Brett jeers. This has been a fantastic start to my day and it can only go downhill from here.
