Mira's POV
I woke to stinging pain in my side, my stomach, and my left leg. S**t, the wounds from the rogue attack still hadn't fully healed. I sat up and saw that I was in chains, silver chains. They were bound around my legs and hands, but I didn't feel any pain.
Silver is harmful to werewolves. I've seen people in my old pack get hurt when they touched pure silver. I guess that doesn't apply to me. Lucky me.
I couldn't feel Juniper in my head, and I started to panic. She's always been quiet, but right now she seemed to be missing from my mind entirely.
"Juni, Juniper, are you there, girl? Juniper, please answer me. Something, anything, just to let me know you're still with me," I called out in a panic in my head, my eyes starting to fill with tears. I can't lose Juniper. She's the only one I have left in this cruel world. She's a part of me I never want to lose.
"I'm trying to get some sleep, Mira. Why the f**k is your voice so loud? I stayed in my form for days to protect you, and this is how you repay me, by disturbing my peace? Ungrateful human," Juniper said playfully in my head, and I sighed with relief as my tears finally spilled down my cheeks.
"You scared me, girl. I thought I'd lost you too," I sobbed through the mindlink. Thank the Moon goddess.
"You can't get rid of me that easily, girl. You're stuck with me for the rest of your life," she said, laughter in her voice, and I laughed weakly too. She's here forever. I need to stop panicking.
"Juni, it's like we have some kind of connection to dark places and imprisonment. We're locked up again, and this time we're in chains," I said with fake cheer, and she laughed. Juniper actually laughed. I hadn't heard her beautiful laugh since we became slaves in the Moonlit pack.
"We're intruders, Mira. We can't be allowed to wander pack land freely. We'll probably be punished when the Alpha gets here. That's the only reason we're still alive in this dungeon," she told me, and I nodded. She had a point.
"Even if we're killed here, at least that mother*****g son of a gun didn't strip us of everything. We'll die with our innocence intact. I couldn't bear the thought of being touched by that vile creature, who should burn in fire for all eternity," I said with a sense of pride, and I felt Juniper nod.
"Why are you so relaxed, Juniper? You haven't been this relaxed or chatty in 8 years. Am I missing something?" I asked, since she didn't seem bothered at all that we were chained and imprisoned.
"I don't know, Mira. I just feel at peace on this land. I just know no harm will come to us," she answered lazily before retreating to the back of my mind again.
After Juniper went to sleep, I was left alone with my thoughts. What did she mean by that? Why would we be safe in this pack? My thoughts were racing a mile a minute when I heard footsteps approaching my cell.
The door opened, and a man about 6 feet tall walked in. I couldn't really make out his features in the darkness, but I could see he was well built and very masculine.
"I see you're awake, rogue. Care to tell me why you're on our land?" he snarled at me, and on instinct I made myself small. I'm going to die. Juniper was wrong.
I curled into myself as the man came closer and reached out to touch me. I couldn't look at him. I shook violently and willed a quick death on myself.
What if they're worse than my old pack? What if I'm defiled and humiliated here? What if Juniper was wrong and we're about to face things worse than anything we've already been through? Those were the thoughts running through my mind as the man came closer.
I realized the man hadn't touched me, and I dared to look up, only to see his eyes glazed over. He must have been mindlinking someone. I'd seen people in my old pack do it, even though I had no mindlink with them.
Suddenly he turned on his heel and left without a word. I sighed with relief and kept sobbing quietly. I just wanted to die. Life hasn't been fair to me since Mom and Dad passed. Why didn't they take me with them? Why did they leave their only daughter in a world so full of evil?
Juniper didn't react to any of this, and I would have smacked her if I could. Our lives were on the line, and she was still so calm and relaxed. What kind of wolf does that?
Then Juniper suddenly grew restless in my head, and I laughed out loud mockingly. "Now you realize we're in danger? You were so calm and relaxed a minute ago. What happened to 'I just feel at peace on this land, I just know no harm will come to us'? Why are you suddenly restless, girl?" I taunted her.
"Shut your mouth, Mira. Something is going to happen, but I don't know what," she replied, still pacing in my head.
"I know what it is, Juni. We're going to die. That's what's going to happen. Don't you get it? And please settle down. You're giving me a headache with all that pacing in my head," I snapped at her. She's so annoying sometimes.
I'd barely finished saying that to Juniper when I caught the most amazing scent in the world. It smelled like coconut and pine, and I wanted to bury myself in it forever.
My eyes widened when I realized I'd felt this before, when I found out Garrett was my mate. I'd been given a second chance mate! That's very rare in the wolf kingdom, and I'd gotten a second chance. Juniper howled happily in my head and bounced around, giving me a headache.
A man walked in, followed by the man from before, and stopped in front of me. I saw his glowing golden eyes, and Juniper said the word in my head: mate.
"There's the rogue, Alpha," the man from before said, and my whole world came crashing down.
Alpha? Another Alpha? What kind of sick game is the Moon goddess playing with me?
"Mine!" his voice boomed around us, letting us know his wolf was in control. He was coming toward me when his eyes suddenly changed color and he stopped abruptly. He seemed to be fighting a battle inside himself, and then he turned on his heel and left.
Oh, great. Our second chance at love doesn't want us either. Way to go, Moon goddess.
