I picked up the gown and admired it. It was the first time in 8 years I'd held anything as nice and beautiful as the gown in my hands. It was midnight black and looked like it would reach my knees. It was a summer dress with pretty pink dots for a pattern. It felt soft to the touch, and I wasn't sure someone like me should be wearing something so pretty.
Then I remembered I'd kept Rosalind waiting in the kitchen, and I quickly put the gown on. It came down to my knees but hung loosely off my body. I finally get to wear something nice, and it doesn't even fit me properly. Just my luck.
I used my dirty clothes to pat my hair dry and tried to detangle it a little with my hands, but that proved difficult. Eventually I gave up and left it down as it was. I folded the clothes I'd been wearing and carried them in my hands as I left the room.
I walked back the way Rosalind and I had come, and as I got closer, the smell of different foods drifted toward me and made my stomach growl even louder. I know we haven't eaten in 3 days, but you have to stop embarrassing me like this, I thought as I neared the kitchen.
When I walked into the kitchen, about 10 pairs of eyes landed on me, and I felt uncomfortable. I found Rosalind's eyes, and she smiled at me warmly, which put me a little at ease. I was glad she wasn't angry that I'd taken my time, and I let out a mental sigh of relief.
"Is she the new girl, Rosalind?" asked a beautiful redhead with striking green eyes, looking toward me.
I looked down at my hands and bare feet and held my breath, waiting for the insults to come. Instead, I sensed someone close to me and looked up to see the redhead standing right beside me. She smelled like strawberries, and her skin glowed.
"Hi, I'm Nessa. Rosalind told me your name is Mira and that you'll be working with us now. I'll be your roommate and your new best friend. It's nice to meet you, chica," she said, so fast and with so much energy that I couldn't answer for a few moments.
"Nice to meet you too, Nessa," I said timidly, and she pulled me into a hug. I stiffened and didn't know how to respond. She noticed, pulled back, and apologized.
"I'm so sorry, Mira. I'm just excited to have a new friend. People say I have too much energy and talk too much, so they tend to avoid me. I feel like we're going to get along, because you're not much of a talker, and because I love the color of your hair and how blue your eyes are. Did you dye your hair, or is that your natural color? If it's natural, that'll be so cool. We'll be an unbeatable duo, with my red hair and your almost-white hair. I'm rambling again, aren't I?" she rattled off, only stopping to catch her breath when she saw how amazed I was at how fast she talked, and that the others in the kitchen were laughing at her.
I laughed lightly, and she clapped her hands excitedly, bouncing a little on her heels. I like her already.
Maybe I really had escaped the hard life in the Moonlit pack after all. I guess I'm not dying anytime soon, as long as I avoid my mate, whose name I don't even know.
I was pulled back to reality when Nessa asked if I'd eaten. My stomach chose that exact moment to make itself known, and everyone laughed. F**k werewolf hearing. Nessa led me to the counter while Rosalind dished food onto plates for me.
I guess I'm free after all.
