Episode 5: The World Before Dawn

1472 Words
One month had passed since the mission in Ashfall’s countryside. One month since the Invasive had stood before us. One month since it had retreated. Not because it had been defeated. Not because it had shown mercy. But because something within us had forced it away. The world did not return to normal after that. It only became louder. ⸻ Reports of Invasive appearances increased throughout the Four Kingdoms. Villages disappeared overnight. Travel routes once considered safe became death traps. Merchant caravans stopped crossing borders without armed escorts. Patrol units vanished without leaving bodies behind. The fear that had once existed only in rumors became reality. People stopped asking whether the Invasives existed. Instead, they asked when they would arrive. ⸻ Ashfall began preparing. The weakest kingdom had no choice. Training grounds filled with volunteers. Retired soldiers returned to service. Blacksmiths worked through the night. Healers prepared supplies. Ordinary people picked up weapons they never thought they would need. Because everyone understood one truth. If Ashfall fell… no one would come to save them. ⸻ The other kingdoms moved as well. Varelden strengthened its military forces. Solmire invested heavily in research and defenses. Thorneveil fortified every major border. Humanity was rebuilding its strength. Preparing for an enemy it barely understood. ⸻ Then another impossible phenomenon appeared. People began awakening. Not marks. Abilities. A fisherman in Solmire manipulated water without knowing how. A soldier in Thorneveil hardened his body like steel. A hunter from Varelden moved faster than the eye could follow. The stories spread quickly. More Awakened appeared every week. Different powers. Different strengths. Different origins. Humanity embraced them as hope. Perhaps they had finally found a way to fight back. ⸻ But those who knew the truth remained silent. Because the Awakened and the Marked were not the same. And no one knew why. ⸻ In the countryside of Ashfall, Shin trained before sunrise. The cold morning air cut against his skin. Strike. Step. Guard. Again. Again. Again. Sweat soaked his clothes. His muscles burned. The mark had remained hidden for days. Yet he could still feel it beneath his skin. Watching. Waiting. Shin lowered his practice sword. “If everyone else is awakening…” He stared at his hand. “…then what are we?” No answer came. Only silence. ⸻ Elsewhere in Ashfall, Draight trained until his body threatened to collapse. He remembered the Invasive. The way it had looked at them. The way it had retreated. Not because of him. Not because of his strength. But because of the mark. He hated that feeling. He attacked again. Again. Again. “I’ll get stronger.” His voice echoed through the empty field. “So strong that nothing can stand above me.” The mark pulsed. Pain surged through his arm. Dark energy gathered around his hand. Draight stumbled backward. Then— a blade appeared. Forged from the mark itself. Rough. Heavy. Powerful. A sword born through will. Draight stared at it. Then smiled. “So this is your answer.” The sword vanished moments later. But he knew it would return. ⸻ Hanori searched for understanding. Books covered his room. Ancient texts. Military records. Forgotten legends. He sought patterns. Logic. Explanation. Then pain erupted across his back. His chair crashed to the floor. Hanori gritted his teeth. White wings unfolded behind him. Large. Beautiful. Impossible. He shut the curtains immediately. His breathing became uneven. His fingers brushed against feathers. Real. “…I need to hide this.” The world feared what it could not understand. And Hanori understood that better than anyone. ⸻ Meanwhile… the strongest kingdom suffered its first true loss. A Varelden Nexus expedition failed to return. Days later, rescue teams recovered a recording crystal. One Nexus had survived long enough to leave a message. The kingdoms gathered to hear it. Kings. Generals. Nexus. The crystal activated. The wounded Nexus appeared. Blood covered his armor. One arm was gone. His breathing was unstable. Behind him… something moved within the darkness. He looked directly into the crystal. “We found them.” Silence filled the chamber. “The records were true.” He swallowed. “There are ten.” His eyes trembled. “The Zen.” “They aren’t ordinary Invasives.” “They lead.” “They command.” “They destroy everything before them.” Fear spread throughout the room. The Nexus coughed violently. Blood stained his lips. “The Zen…” “…they’ve already awakened.” Shock spread instantly. “What?” “They’re awake?” The Nexus shook his head weakly. “Not fully.” “They haven’t regained their complete power.” “But they are moving.” “They are gathering.” “They are influencing the others.” “The Invasives…” “…are no longer acting randomly.” The crystal flickered. A silhouette appeared behind him. Massive. Dark. Unnatural. The Nexus froze. For the first time in history… a Nexus of Varelden looked terrified. “The Nameless King…” His voice cracked. “…has not awakened yet.” The room fell silent. “But according to everything we discovered…” “…when the final seal breaks…” He struggled to breathe. “Three years.” The crystal began losing power. “Three years until the Nameless King rises.” No one moved. No one spoke. The dying Nexus lowered his head. “Prepare humanity.” His eyes filled with despair. “Because once he awakens…” “…there will be no second chance.” The recording glitched. Then his final words echoed throughout the kingdoms. “He is waking.” “The Nameless King…” “…is waking.” The crystal shattered. The Nexus died. ⸻ Fear spread faster than ever before. The strongest kingdom had lost a Nexus. A warrior thought untouchable. Killed. If Nexus could die… then no one was truly safe. ⸻ Emergency meetings began. The existence of the Zen became known. Ten Invasives powerful enough to destroy civilizations. Ten calamities. Ten disasters. Already awake. Already moving. Though incomplete. Though weakened. And above even them… a king without a name. The Nameless One. Sleeping. Waiting. Three years remained. Three years before his resurrection. Three years before humanity faced its greatest nightmare. ⸻ Kael Viremont stood beneath Ashfall’s night sky. His expression darkened. “So the records were true.” He looked toward the countryside. Toward Shin. Toward the regions where Draight and Hanori had gone. “The Marked have less time than I hoped.” Unlike the others… Kael wasn’t surprised. Only tired. As though history had begun repeating itself. “The Nameless King…” “You were never gone.” ⸻ Night settled across Ashfall. Shin wandered deeper into the forest surrounding his father’s home. He didn’t know why. Only that something called to him. A familiar sensation. The mark burned. Dark patterns spread across his hand. Up his arm. The ground trembled. Darkness gathered before him. Not from the sky. Not from the forest. From the mark itself. The energy twisted. Compressed. Took shape. A sword emerged. Black. Elegant. Its surface consumed the moonlight around it. No ancient shrine. No forgotten altar. No legendary weapon waiting to be found. The sword had been created. Born from the Dark Mark itself. Shin reached for its hilt. The moment he touched it— visions flooded his mind. War. Fire. Shadows. Marked figures standing against impossible enemies. The fall of kingdoms. The roar of monsters. Ten overwhelming presences. And beyond them— something sitting upon a throne of endless darkness. Faceless. Nameless. Watching. Shin collapsed to one knee. The sword remained in his grasp. Its weight felt natural. As if it had always belonged to him. He stared at the black blade. “…Who are we?” The forest gave no answer. Only silence. ⸻ Across the kingdoms, humanity prepared. The Awakened trained. Nexus mobilized. Kings planned. Soldiers sharpened their weapons. Hope and fear existed side by side. The world believed it had three years left. But the truth was crueler. The Zen had already awakened. The Invasives were already out of control. The war had already begun. Humanity simply hadn’t realized it yet. And somewhere in the world… other Marked Ones existed. Unknown. Hidden. Waiting. No one knew how many. No one knew where they were. Only that they had returned. ⸻ Under the same moon, Shin held his dark sword. Draight remembered the blade born from his will. Hanori concealed the wings hidden behind closed doors. Three cousins. Separated by distance. Connected by fate. The Marked had awakened. The age of peace had ended. The age of preparation had begun. And before mankind understood the meaning of despair… the countdown toward extinction had already started. Three years remained until the Nameless King’s resurrection. Humanity would spend the next two trying to survive. ⸻ Two years later…
