Chapter 5: Lines That Must Not Be Crossed

819 Words
I wake up with Lucian’s voice still in my head and not because he said much but because he didn’t “Do you have a boyfriend” The question sits heavy in my chest as I get dressed and pack my books and step out of the house like nothing happened even though everything feels different. *** At school the halls are loud and alive and cruel in the way they always are and I move through them like I belong even when I don’t. I keep telling myself it was just a question and that I imagined the weight behind it and that Lucian Dominic does not ask things without a reason I find the library because it is quiet and because I need quiet to think and because no one looks at you too closely there. I am already seated when I feel it.. the shift in the air. Lucian does not make noise when he walks but people always feel him before they see him and when I look up he is standing across the table like he planned this. He sits without asking, we do not greet each other “You don’t have a boyfriend,” he says It is not a question “No,” I answer and my voice is steady even though my hands are not He studies me for a moment like he is deciding something and I hate that I cannot read his face “I need you,” he says calmly My heart stumbles “For what,” I ask “A girlfriend,” he replies The word feels unreal and wrong in the quiet space between us “This is a joke,” I say even though it doesn’t sound like one “It isn’t,” he says and his voice never changes I laugh softly because it feels safer than crying and because people like him do not choose people like me “You don’t even know me,” I say “I know enough,” he answers I shake my head and push my chair back slightly “No,” I say “I won’t do that” “You will,” he says calmly “Because you don’t have a choice” Cold spreads through me “This will be public,” he continues “People will question it and that is the point” “Why me,” I ask and this time I don’t hide how my voice breaks He pauses, deliberate “Because you are invisible,” he says “And because you know how to survive quietly” I swallow “And what happens to me,” I ask “At school and at work” “No one finds out about the mansion,” he says “And nothing about your life changes unless you let it” I sit there in silence then straighten my back “If I do this,” I say “There will be rules” He nods once “No touching unless I allow it,” I say “No humiliating me in public and no revealing that I work for your family and when this ends it ends quietly” He listens without interrupting “And no feelings,” I add Something flickers in his eyes then disappears “That won’t be a problem,” he says My hands shake as I reach into my bag and pull out a folded paper “I want this written,” I say “I won’t do this on trust” He looks at the paper then at me He takes it and reads slowly, carefully, like he’s checking details not deciding When he’s done, he reaches into his own bag and pulls out a pen “Add one thing,” he says, sliding the paper back to me I freeze He taps near the bottom “No falling in love,” he says “On either side” My throat tightens “This isn’t real,” he adds quietly “You’ll survive better if you remember that” I sign The sound feels too loud He takes the paper and signs beneath my name without hesitation then folds it once and slips it into his bag “That’s it,” he says, standing I look up, waiting for something softer “You should understand one thing,” he adds I hold my breath “Once people believe you’re mine,” he says “They won’t be kind to you” My stomach sinks “And I won’t stop them” He walks away yet I stay seated in the library staring at the empty chair, my signature burning in my mind and the rule echoing louder than anything else “No falling in love” And for the first time, I understand that this fake relationship will not protect me but It will expose me.
