THE THINGS SHE DOESN’T ASK

697 Words
🖤 Cassy didn't mean to listen. But when the walls are thin— And the silence is heavy— Some things are impossible to ignore. — "…You left without saying anything." Veronica's voice. Soft. Controlled. But carrying something deeper underneath. — "I had my reasons," Caleb replied. Flat. Distant. But not cold enough. — Cassy's fingers hovered above her keyboard. Not typing. Not moving. Just… there. — "You always do," Veronica said quietly. A pause. Then— "But you never told me." Silence. — Cassy swallowed slightly. Because this wasn't just a conversation. It was history. Unfinished. Unresolved. — "I don't owe you explanations," Caleb said. That sounded more like him. More controlled. More guarded. — Veronica let out a small breath. "You owe me honesty." That word echoed. Honesty. — Cassy looked down. Because suddenly— She didn't know where she stood in all of this. — Inside the office— Caleb didn't respond immediately.Because Veronica wasn't wrong. But she wasn't entirely right either. — "What do you want?" he asked again. Straight to the point. — Veronica stepped closer. Not too close. But close enough to remind him of something familiar. — "I told you," she said softly. "I came back for you." Silence. — Caleb's expression didn't change. But something in his posture did. A slight tension. A slight pause. — "That's not going to happen," he said. Clear. Firm. Final. — Outside— Cassy's chest tightened. Just slightly. But enough. — Inside— Veronica smiled faintly. "I didn't expect you to say yes immediately." A pause. Then— "You never did make things easy." — Caleb exhaled slowly. "This isn't a negotiation." Veronica tilted her head. "Everything with you is." — Silence. — Cassy closed her eyes for a second. Because now— She didn't know what she was hoping to hear. — "You should leave," Caleb said. That part sounded like him again. Cold. Controlled. Distant. — Veronica didn't move. "Not yet," she said softly. A pause. Then— "I want to understand something first." — Caleb's eyes narrowed slightly. "What?" — And then— Veronica glanced toward the door. Toward the glass walls. Toward Cassy. — "…Her." Silence. — Cassy froze. Completely. — Inside— Caleb's expression hardened slightly. "That's not your concern." Veronica smiled. "But it is yours." A pause. Then— "And that makes it mine." — That line hung in the air. Sharp. Intentional. — Cassy's grip tightened on her pen. Because now— She wasn't just overhearing. She was part of the conversation. Even without stepping inside. — "She works for me," Caleb said. Simple. Professional. Safe. — But Veronica didn't look convinced. "That's all?" Silence. — And that silence— That hesitation— Said more than any answer could have. — Cassy looked down again. Because she didn't want to hear what came next. But she couldn't stop listening. — Inside— Caleb finally spoke. "Yes." One word. Clear. Controlled. — But something about it felt incomplete. Like something was being held back. — Veronica watched him carefully. Then smiled faintly. "Alright," she said softly. "But I don't believe you." — That was it. That was the line. — Outside— Cassy's chest tightened again. Stronger this time. Because Veronica saw it. What Cassy herself wasn't ready to fully admit. — Inside— "You don't need to," Caleb said. His voice colder now. More distant. More controlled. — Veronica nodded slowly. "Then I'll stay long enough to see it for myself." Silence. — And just like that— Everything changed again. — Because now— It wasn't just about what Caleb and Cassy felt. — It was about what someone else was starting to see. — And the moment other people start seeing something… It becomes harder to hide. Harder to deny. Harder to ignore. — Cassy finally stood up. Quietly. Carefully. — Because suddenly— She needed air. She needed distance. She needed space to think. — But most of all— She needed to understand something she hadn't asked yet. — Where do I stand in his world? — And for the first time— She wasn't sure she wanted to hear the answer.
