There they were greeted by the lord chamberlain and led inside to an astonishing spiral staircase of immense proportions, carved of black marble streaked with silver. Upstairs, they were led through another set of enormous doors into a great exhibition hall filled with sculptures, paintings, jewellery—every kind of art imaginable—resting on marble plinths.
