THE NEXT MORNING, RAFFERTY found himself whistling as he started the car. He laughed, and murmured to himself, ‘Better cut that out, it’s a sure giveaway.’ Twenty minutes later, he was in the office, and between juggling the statements of the most likely possibilities amongst the suspects, he felt no inclination to whistle. He sighed instead, and said, ‘We ought to get ourselves along to the rugby club. Talk to the manager and players and hangers-on. Never know, we might learn something to our advantage.’ Llewellyn nodded, said, ‘I’ll slot it in for later tomorrow morning, after training.’ Five minutes later, Rafferty murmured, ‘Alice Douglas.
