The city of Varanasi never changed much. But for the newly constructed buildings and flyovers, it retained its spiritual flavour in every aspect of life. This is what enchanted Chaaya every time she was in her home town -- the city's valiant efforts to blend with modern times while still adhering to an ancient way of life endeared her to it. Though she loved the city, its rigidity, at times, maddened her. But it also made her proud. People like her grandparents never understood anything beyond Varanasi or Kashi as they called it lovingly. One could never think of moving them away from the old house they were living in. This was what worried Chaaya now.
