CHAPTER2

Aaron Steph hits the brakes all of a sudden, prompting me to stumble forward, that I crash my forehead on the driver’s seat in front of me and dropped my iPad. “Oow! Take it easy, Steph. Jesus!” I yelled at him, taking off my airpods. “Oh My God!” Steph exclaimed, his voice trembling with fear. “What is it?” I questioned a little too quickly, glaring at him. I was already pissed. “We–we've just hit a lady, sir” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “What!” I stormed outside the car with Steph, rushing to the front only to see the beautiful woman with beeline honey hair, likely to be in her mid or late twenties lying lifeless on the tiled road with blood surging from her head. What have you done, Steph?… “Marietta?! Marietta?!!” A pretty blonde with Auburn hair screamed as she rushed to meet the woman on the ground. Tears dripping seriously from her eyes when she saw the blood. “Somebody call an ambulance!!!” she yelled for help, trying to raise the woman. A tanned skinned man with brown hair also rushed to meet them on the ground. I stood there, looking like a fool, not knowing how to react to the disaster happening before my eyes. It was as if my legs were laced to the spot where I was standing. Some passerby gathered, gaping at us. The Auburn haired lady shoots her head up to look at me, her eyes blazing with fire. My heart jerked as she stood up quickly, marching towards me. “You killed her! You killed my sister!” she screamed, slamming my chest uncontrollably with her fists. “Calm down, miss,” I said, holding both her hands, thwarting her from hitting me any further, “it's not my fault she jumped into the middle of the road.” I defended, trying to calm her. She continues to sob, struggling with me as I held her tightly. “She has a pulse… she has a pulse!” the tan skinned man with brown hair shouted. I rushed to meet them, suggesting we use my car. Steph joined us and together we all supported Marietta into the back seat of the car and sped to the hospital. The drive was filled with tension that I couldn't help but yell at Steph to drive faster. “Help!!!” I yelled for assistance, carrying Marietta bridal style as we entered the hospital. The nurses who saw us quickly signaled for a stretcher and as soon as it came, Marietta was taken into the emergency room as the nurses asked us to wait outside. The Auburn hair lady, who I still don't know her name, turned back to face me when the nurses shuts the door on us. Her facial expression mixed with anger and sadness. “Pray to God nothing happens to my sister, else!” she spat, pointing a finger at my face. Her cheeks red from her cry. The audacity of this lady. “Relax, Olivia, nothing is going to happen to her” the brown-haired man told her, tugging her by the arm. Great! She goes by Olivia. “Watch the way you speak to me, miss. Besides it's not my fault she jumped into the middle of the road without watching” I said curtly already irritated by her blaming me even though it wasn't my fault. “Then whose fault is it then, mine?” “Who knows… maybe she ran into the middle of the road because she was trying to get away from your pesty a*s ” I let out, looking away from her direction. She scoffed before trying to lunge at me but the brown-haired man quickly grabbed her by the waist. I must have pushed her buttons. “Let me go,” she yelled at the brown-haired man, “this a*****e needs… to be thought… a lesson” she faltered, struggling to break free from the man’s grasp. I didn't flinch. I stood still, watching them battle with each other. “Calm down, Olivia” the brown-haired guy told her, still holding her firmly. The buzzing sound of my phone made her stop. She frustratingly tugged herself from the man’s grip and walked to sit down. The man excused himself and followed her. I dipped my hand into my pocket and brought out my phone. “Hello” I spoke up, taking some steps away from them. It was Maxwell, my best friend and my assistant to be on the phone. “What's up, man?. We were supposed to meet twenty minutes ago. Where are you?” I glanced at my wristwatch. Shit! He's right. No wonder he sounded pissed. And besides I look a mess with the blood stains on my shirt. “Sorry Max, something came up. I'm at the hospital” I told him. “The hospital? What the f**k are you doing at the hospital? Is everything okay?” “Yes I'm fine. Steph knocked down a lady on our way to you so we're at the hospital” I informed him. “Oh My God… how’s she doing? Is it serious?” Maxwell asked, his tone filled with concern. “I don't know yet, man. Right now the doctors are doing their best to save her life” He sighed on the other end. “So when are we going to meet? I have a friend of mine willing to help you” “Not now, Max. I'll call you soon… the doctor is here” I lied. “Wait but—” I hung up, stopping him from speaking any further. I remained where I was, watching Olivia and the brown-haired guy whisper to each other. God knows what they are talking about. ♠︎♠︎♠︎ I was drawn out of my short nap when the door of the emergency room was pushed open. God, how long have I been asleep? I had decided to wait until the doctor was done before I could leave, and taking a seat opposite from Olivia and the brown-haired man, I didn't know when I slept off. The doctor stepped out and Olivia rushed to meet him along with the brown-haired guy. I drew closer to them, my heart gaining momentum as the doctor heaved a sigh. It was evident I was scared. I wouldn't want the blood of an innocent woman to be on my hands even though it was neither mine nor Steph's fault. Olivia raised her brows, as if expecting a relieving report from the doctor as she was already getting antsy. The doctor cleared his throat briefly before commencing. “We've succeeded in stabilizing her but her head injury is pretty bad,” said the doctor, “It is good you brought her here in time, otherwise she would have lost her life.” “But is she going to be okay?” Olivia asked, trailing back to the most important question. “Well… it is possible she may not remember some previous event due to the impact to the head. We've had so many cases like that but I am sure she's going to be okay” “Wait… you mean she won't be able to remember how the accident happened?” Olivia asked, glancing at the brown-haired man. “Uhh… possibly, but we still need to run more tests to be sure. But for now we can only pray she wakes up soon” the doctor announced and we all nodded. The brown-haired man drew Olivia into an embrace when she heaved a sigh and her face turned pale. “Alright, Doc. Thank you” the brown-haired man said and with that, the doctor turned to leave. I cleared my throat, breaking the growing silence between the three of us as we watched the doctor walk away. “I guess I should be leaving now. And don't worry about the bill, I'll cover it” I told them, turning on my heels. “Wait” the brown-haired man’s voice made me halt, “Thank you for your helping us” he expressed. “It's nothing” “The name is Nicholas by the way… Nicholas Campbell” he finally introduced, extending his hand for a shake and I took it. “Aaron Blakeley.” He examined me from head to toe before letting go of my hand. “You're welcome to visit whenever you—” A slap to the arm by Olivia stopped him from completing his words. “No he's not” I shake my head, smiling softly at her abrasiveness. “Thank you for the offer but I'll pass,” I said, before walking out of the hospital into the cold dark night. I must have slept for a really long time because it was already dark. I pulled out my phone to call Max. I had other important things to take care of and this?… this was only a distraction to snatch the rest of my day.
