Chapter 5 – The Public Wound

1042 Words
POV: Wren Julian wants an audience for her humiliation tonight, so he has invited just enough of the right people to make sure the story travels. Wren moves through the living room with a silver tray of champagne glasses. The house is full of low talk and polite laughter. Julian stands near the fireplace with a small group of men who matter in the city’s business circles. He looks relaxed and pleased with himself. She keeps her eyes down and offers the tray to each guest in turn and most of them take a glass without really seeing her, that is how Julian prefers it. Then she reaches the far side of the room and the air changes. Leo, Kai, and Bastian are all here, they arrived twenty minutes ago and have not left her line of sight since. This time they refuse to pretend, so Kai steps forward when she nears him and takes a glass from the tray. His fingers brush hers on purpose and stay there a second too long. The contact is warm and steady and she pulls the tray back first. He does not smile, but his eyes stay on her face as if he is checking for damage. Leo stands a few feet away and his gaze follows her wherever she goes, open and burning. He has not touched a drink yet but his hand stays tight around the empty glass he took earlier. Bastian is the only one speaking, he stands with Julian and two other men, talking about property values and zoning changes, but his eyes never leave Wren. He studies the way she holds the tray, the space she keeps from Julian, the careful blankness on her face. He looks like a man examining a cage he already plans to break. Wren finishes the circle and returns to the sideboard for more glasses. Julian’s voice carries across the room. “Wren. Another round for this side.” She fills the tray again, walks toward him and the group around Julian opens to let her through and she offers the tray. Julian takes a glass and holds it up as if making a toast, but his eyes stay on her. “My wife,” he says to the men beside him. “Still learning how to be useful in public. She had some past mistakes that made things difficult for a while but we do not talk about them much anymore. She is lucky anyone still allows her in polite company at all.” The words are soft but they land like a slap. The talk around them dies, a few people glance at Wren and then away and the silence stretches. Leo’s glass cracks in his hand, the sound is sharp and sudden. Champagne spills over his fingers and onto the floor but he does not seem to notice because his eyes are locked on Julian. Kai takes a single step forward, his shoulders are set and his jaw is tight. He looks ready to close the remaining distance in one move. Bastian’s voice cuts through the quiet, calm and deadly. “Say that again.” Julian turns toward him, still smiling. “I was only stating facts, no need for drama.” Bastian does not raise his voice. “You will not speak about her that way while I am in the room.” Kai’s hands are fists at his sides, Leo sets the broken glass on a side table without looking at it and the three of them form a quiet wall between Julian and Wren. Guests begin to shift and murmur. Someone laughs too loudly in the corner to fill the silence and Julian’s smile thins, but he does not back down. “This is my house,” he says. “This is my wife and I own all of her. I decide how things are said here.” Wren sees the exact moment the night is about to break open and if any of the three men takes one more step, Julian will make sure the story spreads before morning. He will call in every favor and he will close every door that still carries her family name. Her mother will pay for it, the last scraps of respect left to the Castellans will disappear and she cannot let that happen. She steps between them. “That’s enough,” she says. Her voice is steady even though her pulse is racing. She looks at Kai first, then Leo, then Bastian. “Please. Not here.” Kai’s eyes flash and he starts to speak, then stops himself, jaw locked. “No.” She keeps her body between them and Julian. “You are guests in this house. Act like it.” Leo’s face is pale with anger, but he stops. Bastian studies her for a long second and something shifts behind his calm expression. He gives a small nod, the kind that says he is only stepping back for her sake, not because he agrees. Julian watches the exchange with interest. “Listen to her. She still knows her place when it matters.” Wren turns her head just enough to look at him. “I will bring fresh glasses.” She walks back to the sideboard and her hands want to shake, but she does not let them. She loads a new tray and begins to move through the room again. The talk slowly returns, lower and more careful than before. People avoid her eyes and she feels the weight of every glance. Kai stays near the wall, watching her, Leo has not moved from his spot and Bastian returns to the conversation with Julian as if nothing happened, but his attention remains fixed on her. The three of them no longer look like men waiting for permission, they look like men who have already decided the rules have changed. Wren offers a glass to a woman near the window and the woman takes it without thanking her. When Wren turns, she meets Bastian’s eyes across the room, he does not look away, neither do the other two. The message in their faces is the same. They are no longer asking for permission to come back into her life.
