Chapter 3 Elara's POV "What?" I gasped in almost a whisper with disbelief in every inch of my voice. "I said, is there anything you want that you don't have? Food, clothing, shelter, jewellery?" He asked again. I wasn't having this. I turned around to leave and he grabbed my arm. I turned back to look at him and his face was still stone cold. "Go straight home. Don't take any detours. Straight home. And don't wait for me" he said and let my arm go before walking away back into the party. My legs felt like they couldn't carry me. This was the worst day of my life. My heart, my body, my mind, everything was heavy. I couldn't take it anymore. I ran out to the car and told the chauffeur to take me home. We got home and I immediately ran to my room and collapsed on my bed to cry my eyes out. I had nobody to call or vent to. My father passed soon after I got married and my mum was in intensive care. And Rose, my best and only friend, had done something even worse to me than my husband. I cried, stopped and cried again for hours until I heard a vehicle coming in. I ran downstairs to see Eiran and he walked in, reeking of alcohol but he didn't appear drunk. He was still very much himself with the look he gave me. My.eyes immediately fell on his white shirt's collar which had stains of a bright red lipstick on it. My eyes immediately widened as I shot at him. I had already been heartbroken recently but this was the final nail in the coffin. "What's the meaning of this, Eiran? What the f**k is the meaning of this?" "You want to know what? I'm tired of you! I'm sick and tired of your barrenness and I'm done with you! In fact, sign these documents and leave my life so I can find some peace!" He threw a brown envelope at me and walked up to his room. I opened the envelope and found divorce papers inside. For some weird reason, I wasn't surprised or fazed. It felt like I was expecting it after everything that happened today. I simply clenched my teeth and walked up to my own room. I was fed up too. I could endure ignoring me and disregarding me but I would never stand for infidelity. I immediately and quickly signed the papers and pulled out a stack of pictures I had kept in my bedside table. I took them to his room and burst open his door, charging into his room. "Here are your divorce papers!" I threw the envelope on him. He looked up at me in slight skepticism. I didn't even care to notice. I threw the stack of pictures on him and watched as they scattered all over him, revealing shots that had been taken of him and Rose in each other's arms at a hotel. Rose, you ask? Yes, Rose. My "best friend". Apparently, she was seeing my husband and they had been getting intimate. "That's you and your mistress isn't it? I've known for some time. But I prayed, wished and believed it wasn't real and you wouldn't stood so low and be actually this wicked. How wrong I was. Both of you are disgusting human beings. You can marry her and let her bear your kids" I finalised and walked out of his room and the entire house. I couldn't stay another second in that house. I lodged at a hotel and spent the night there. The next day, as I checked out, I saw Rose running up to me. I immediately put on my shades and tried to take a different route. "Elara, please, don't do this. I swear you've misunderstood everything. It's not what you think at all" she said, bracketing me from my detour. "Please, Rose. Don't sell me that bullshit. I'm not a kid. I know what I saw. You're supposed to be my friend. I let you come to my matrimonial home. I literally made you part of my family. I gave you a safe space and was more than a sister to you. And you do this to me? I should have known that all the time to celebrated with us, you were scheming to snatch my husband. Congrats, you've won" I replied and turned to move but she blocked me again. I rolled my eyes and scoffed. "Do I have to call the authorities on you, Rose?" "Please, Elara, I swear, you're reading all this wrong. It's not as you saw. I beg you, hear me out" she kept on begging but I was fed up. "Then how do you explain that?" I pointed behind her to Eiran coming out of the same room she came out from. Her jaw dropped as she stuttered to utter something. "I wish you both a happy married life. I hope it was worth it" I said and walked out of the hotel, making a mental note to cut ties with both of them. I had already sworn not to cry over them ever again but as I left the hotel, I couldn't help but feel the crushing pain of the betrayal. My eyes glinted, almost blocking my vision but my eyes caught an elderly woman on the pedestrian walkway and a speeding car behind her. "Ma'am!" I screamed and dashed towards her, pulling her out of the walkway. The car sped past where she was standing and continued speeding away. People were actually crazy! "Are you alright, ma'am?" I called at the elderly woman but she had already fainted, probably from the shock. I immediately dialed emergency and she was rushed to the hospital. I stayed with her as there was no way to contact her relatives. She woke up not too long later and grabbed my hand, squeezing it. "Thank you so much, my daughter, you saved my life" she thanked me with all honesty. Wow, there were actually grateful people left on earth? I smiled. "It's my pleasure, Ma'am. Are you okay?" I asked. "Yes, dear. I'm okay. But I'm sorry, I have nothing to offer you in appreciation. I have no money on me" she replied. I chuckled. "You don't have to give me any reward, ma'am. I was simply doing what was expected of me as a person" I smiled and squeezed her hand. "Can you contact your people?" I asked. "Yes, I can. Thank you" she replied and my phone immediately rang. When the caller id appeared on my screen, my heart skipped a bit. It was the doctor in charge of my mum's intensive care. "Hello, Dr. Richard" I greeted, walking out of the old woman's room. "Hello, Elara. Sorry to inform you but I believe your mother is at her last minutes on earth. It would be best if you shared her last moments by her side with her" he dropped the bomb.
