Months went by, and Emily tried to move on. She dated other guys, but none of them made her feel the way James did. She tried to write, but she couldn't concentrate. Until she forgot about being a writer and just focused on her career as a staff member in a coffee shop to make herself busy and forget about him.
One day, she received a letter in the mail. It was from James. He was coming back to town for a show, and he wanted to see her. Emily was torn and she didn't know if she was ready to see him again. But something inside her told her to go and meet him after all those years passed.
She arrived at the venue, and James was waiting for her outside. He looked the same as he did when they first met, except for a few new wrinkles and a tiredness in his eyes.
"Hey," he said, smiling. As if nothing happened between them.
"Hey," Emily said, trying to hide her emotions and stopping herself from hugging him.
They talked for a while, catching up on everything that had happened since they last saw each other. James told Emily about his travels, his new songs, and the other musicians he had met along the way.
Emily listened, trying to be happy for him, but she couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. James seemed distant, like he was holding something back.
After the show, they went back to Emily's apartment.
"I wrote a song for you," James said, looking up at her.
It was a beautiful song. Full of love and longing . But deep inside for Emily it would be the last goodbye song. James was telling her that he had to go back on the road, that he couldn't stay in one place for too long. He was telling her that their time together was over. That she should probably move on with her life and continue to reach her dreams.
Tears run down in Emily's eyes as the song ended. James looked at her, and she could see the pain in his own eyes.
"I'm sorry," he said. "I didn't mean for it to end like this."
Emily nodded, unable to speak. She knew that James had to follow his dreams, but it didn't make the pain any less real.
They hugged each other for a long time, not wanting to let go. And then James left, disappearing into the night.
Emily was heartbroken. She didn't know how to move on from this. But she knew that she had to try. She had to find a way to live her life without James.
She picked up her pen and started writing again. And this time, she wrote about the pain of losing someone you love. She poured all of her emotions onto the page, and it was cathartic. Its like releasing the pain that she felt for over the years had passed. She has to move on and back on the track again for reaching her dream as a writer.
