**Chapter 7 – Late Office Hours**

376 Words
The halls were nearly empty when Elena flipped the sign on her classroom door to *“Do Not Disturb.”* The fluorescent lights buzzed softly overhead as she sat at her desk, sifting through a pile of essays. The air smelled faintly of old paper and coffee—the scent of late nights spent chasing clarity in the words of teenagers. She hadn’t expected Julian to show up. But there he was, leaning against the doorframe, hoodie pulled tight, eyes wide and uncertain. “Ms. Hart?” She looked up, startled. “Julian. It’s late.” He stepped inside hesitantly, closing the door behind him. “I—I needed to talk.” She gestured to the chair beside her. “Okay. What’s on your mind?” He sank down, hands folded tightly in his lap. For a long moment, neither spoke. Finally, he said, “I didn’t understand why you canceled the mentorship session.” Elena swallowed hard. “I thought it might be better to give you space.” “Space from what?” His voice cracked slightly. “From you?” “No,” she said quickly. “From... confusion. From things that might be misunderstood.” He shook his head. “I don’t care what people think. I just wanted to keep writing. To keep learning.” His honesty caught her off guard. She took a breath. “I want that too. But I also have to be careful. There are rules—lines I can’t cross.” He nodded slowly. “I get that.” Then he looked up, meeting her eyes fully for the first time. “But I don’t want you to stop seeing me. Not really.” The vulnerability in his voice was raw, unfiltered. Elena felt the tension of weeks unwind in that moment. “I’m not stopping,” she said softly. “But we have to be honest about what this is. About who we are.” He smiled—a small, fragile thing. “Teacher and student.” She smiled back. “For now.” --- As he left, Elena felt a mixture of relief and apprehension. The line had been acknowledged. It was still there. But it wasn’t a wall. Not yet.
