I sat at the table, baby in my arm, free hand gripping a cup of coffee. Seth stared back at me, silently, also holding a mug of coffee. I could hear Kayne entertaining Makayla, Seth's girlfriend, in the other room. I wondered if Seth regretted agreeing to talk.
“How are things here?” He finally spoke up.
“They're... good. Kayne is kind. Being a mom can be overwhelming, at times.” I said. “How are things with Makayla?”
“They're good, as well. It's nice to have someone who understands me and my circumstances. It's good to have company again. When you left, I was empty. I couldn't have lived life like that.”
“You don't have to explain yourself to me, Seth, I get it. That's not why I wanted to talk to you.” I told him.
“What's up?” He asked.
“I was wondering if we could spend a weekend together. Just to test it. Just to see what it would be like. I never thought I would be doing these things without you, and I just want to know... need to know... what it would've been like.” I said.
He went quiet for a moment.
“I'd have to see what Makayla thinks.” He finally answered.
“Of course. If not, I totally understand. I'm happy that you found her, Seth. I want you to be happy.” I said. It hurt a lot to say it. I did want him to be happy, but it was hard to see him finding happiness in someone else. It was strange to see our lives so far off of the course we had planned.
Makayla and Kayne came into the kitchen after a tour of the house, as if on queue. Makayla walked behind Seth to take a seat as his side. He placed a hand on her thigh. Kayne sat next to me and reached for Luka, holding him against his chest.
“Makayla, what would you think about Bria and I spending a weekend together?” Seth asked her.
“No pressure, and if you want to discuss it alone...” I started.
“Nonsense.” She said with a smile. “I think it's a great idea. I would just ask that I be allowed to pop in throughout the weekend, we don't spend much time apart.”
“Absolutely. I would never expect you to stay away from your partner. It will be hard for me to be away from Kayne, as well.” I said.
Seth looked a little shocked.
Kayne rubbed my back. There was tension in the room as we all pretended to look at other things rather than stare at each other.
“Seth, would you like to see the pack's practice area?” Kayne asked. “I'm sure the ladies could use some talk time.”
“Yeah man, thanks.” He said. He stood up and followed Kayne out.
Makayla and I sat in silence for only a few moments.
“He's beautiful.” She said, gesturing to Luka.
“Thank you.” I said, smiling at her.
“I was pregnant when they took Dylan. We had s*x before our mating ceremony. I thought if I was pregnant, they wouldn't make him go.” She said.
“Dylan was your mate?”
“Yes.”
“What happened to the baby?” I asked.
“I miscarried shortly after he left. He doesn't even know. When I told him about the pregnancy, we went straight to the Alpha, well, your father. He agreed original that Dylan shouldn't leave. We went to the elders. Spirit Moon's pack would've died out without him. They needed an Alpha male to mate with the Alpha's daughter... Similar to you and Kayne. Their pack is primarily female and many have mates. Their pack is getting smaller and many are related to the Apha's family, so they cannot mate. Dylan's father was an Alpha's son, so he was one of the only ones fit to be an Alpha in another pack. Neither of us agreed, but his parents forced him and promised they would help me raise our baby. The day he left, he couldn't stop rubbing and kissing my stomach. He told the baby he loved them and to grow up strong, that he would do anything to see them when he could. He would've been a good father. I miscarried a few weeks after he left. He doesn't even know the baby is gone, and it's hard to reach Spirit moon.”
“I'm so sorry.” I told her. I couldn't imagine if I had lost Luka. Especially if it had been my only chance to have a piece left of my mate.
“Thank you. That's why I don't mind you and Seth giving it a shot. If I could see Dylan, even just for a day, for an hour. I would do it. I would do anything for that.”
“Thank you.” I said.
Later, after Seth and Makayla left, I went to Kayne.
“Could you talk to Spirit Moon, if you wanted?” I asked.
“Perhaps. Why?” He asked.
“Makayla... Her mate was taken there to marry the Alpha's daughter and take over the pack. She was pregnant, Kayne. When he left, she was pregnant. She lost the baby and he doesn't even know. No one can get ahold of them. She should see him.” I said.
“I'll see what I can do.” He promised.
