Chapter 3: The Poisoned Gift

The day of the overall moon dawned shiny and clear. Hera woke early, her stomach in knots. Tonight, the percent might run collectively, and yet again, she'd be left in the back. As she dressed, a tender knock got here at her door. "Come in," she called. Jessica entered with a warm smile on her face. "Good morning, sweetie. I delivered you something." She held out a small, ornate container. Hera took it, curiosity overcoming her standard wariness around Jessica . "What's this?" Hera asked. Jessica 's eyes sparkled. "Open it and see." Inside the box became a sensitive silver necklace with a moonstone pendant. Hera gasped. "It's lovely," she whispered. "I don't think you can put it on tonight," Jessica stated. "For success. Oh, and I nearly forgot!" She pulled out an envelope. "This got here for you. From James." Hera's coronary heart skipped a beat as she took the letter. "Thank you, Jessica ." Once by myself, Hera eagerly opened the envelope. Inside changed into an observation in James's handwriting: "Hera, Meet me at the antique cottage near the percent's Japanese border this afternoon. I have a wonder for you. Come alone. - James" Excitement bubbled up inside her. Was this it? Has James made his choice? As the day wore on, Hera's anticipation grew. She slipped far away from the percent house not noted, the necklace from Jessica cool in opposition to her skin. Meanwhile, Susan couldn't shake her unease. She'd been watching Jessica intently and something felt off. When she noticed Hera leaving alone, her instincts screamed threat. Susan approached James, who became busy with arrangements for the total moon run. "Have you seen Hera?" James frowned. "Not on account of this morning. Why?" "I noticed her leaving the pack. Lands," Susan said. "Alone." An alarm flashed across James's face. "That's not like her now. We want to discover her." As they prepared a seek party, neither observed Jessica slipping away with a glad smirk. Hera reached the vintage cottage simply as the sun began to set. Her exhilaration grew to become confused when she determined the door ajar. "James?" She is known as stepping in. A younger lady she did not recognize greeted her. "You must be Hera. I'm Caroline. James asked me to get you settled at the same time as you look forward to him." Hera's unease grew, but she drove it aside. This became James's surprise, in the end. Caroline led her to a comfy sitting room. "Tea?" she offered. Hera nodded, her throat dry. As she sipped the steaming liquid, a wave of dizziness washed over her. "I don't experience so precisely," Hera mumbled her imaginative and prescient blurring. The last thing she noticed before darkness claimed her changed into Caroline's face, twisted with regret. Panic gripped Crestmoon pack. As night fell without a signal of Hera. James paced anxiously, his wolf clawing to be released. "We've searched everywhere," Mark, his beta, said. "No trace of her." Susan burst into the room, clutching a crumpled piece of paper. "I located this in Hera's room," she panted. "It's a notice, supposedly from you." James snatched the paper, his face darkening as he read. "I didn't write this," he growled. "The antique cottage," Susan stated. "That's in which she needs to be long gone." Without any other phrase, James shifted into his huge black wolf. Susan observed a match, her russet fur sparkling in the moonlight. Together, they raced through the woodland, the rest of the hunt birthday celebration struggling to keep up. At the cottage, Hera drifted in and out of cognizance. Through the haze, she heard voices arguing. "This wasn't part of the plan," Caroline hissed. "You stated the tea could just make her sleep!" "Plans change," an acquainted voice responded coldly. Hera's blood ran cold as she recognized Jessica . "The little weakling changed into turning into too much of a hassle. This solves the whole lot." Hera attempted to transport, to cry out, however her frame would not reply. Panic clawed at her throat as she found out the severity of her state of affairs. Outside, James and Susan approached the cottage carefully. The scent of worry and something sickly sweet stuffed the air. "Poison," Susan growled softly. James's eyes flashed with rage. He turned in approximately to charge in while Susan held him back. "Wait," she whispered. "Listen." Through the skinny partitions, they might hear Jessica 's voice. "Once she's long past, you will inform James you determined her like this. A tragic twist of fate. He'll be devastated, of course, however, I'll be there to comfort him." "And what about the alternative one? Susan ?" Caroline requested. Jessica laughed cruelly. "Oh, I have plans for her too. But one problem at a time." James had heard sufficient. With a furious roar, he burst through the door, Susan proper in the back of him. Jessica 's face paled. "James! I... We had been simply..." But James changed into Hera's facet, lightly lifting her limp form. "What have you ever done?" he said. Susan blocked the go-out as Caroline tried to escape. "Don't even think about it," she growled. As the pack. Guards arrived, and James barked orders. "Take them into custody. And get our healer right here now!" Hours surpassed in a blur of frantic interest. The healer labored tirelessly to counteract the poison even as James and Susan stood vigil at Hera's bedside. "She's stabilizing," the healer announced sooner or later. "But she's not out of the woods." Relief washed over James, however, it quickly changed using guilt. "I must have seen this coming," he stated softly. "Jessica 's been my buddy for years. How could I be so blind?" Susan positioned a comforting hand on his arm. "You could not have known. Jessica fooled everybody." As sunrise broke, Hera's eyes fluttered open. "James?" she whispered weakly. James turned into her side on the spot, taking her hand. "I'm right here," he stated, his voice thick with emotion. "You're safe now." Hera's gaze moved to Susan , confusion and gratitude mingling in her eyes. "You... You each saved me?" Susan nodded a small smile on her face. "Turns out we make a pretty proper crew." As Hera drifted back to sleep, James and Susan exchanged a look of understanding. Whatever challenges lay beforehand, they would face them collectively. Outside the cottage, the total moon hung low in the sky, a silent witness to the nighttime's occasions. The bond between Alpha and his buddies had been tested and reinforced. But as the sun rose on a brand new day, none of them realized that this was just the beginning of their trials. Jessica might be caught, but her internet of deceit ran deeper than anybody suspected. As Crestmoon celebrated Hera's rescue, dark forces were already collecting at the horizon, equipped to check the bounds of affection, loyalty, and the very cloth in their international.
