Chapter 2: Whispers Beneath the Moon

705 Words
The celebration ended before dawn. Where there had once been cheers and songs around blazing bonfires, only uneasy whispers remained. No one spoke of the awakened wolves anymore. Every conversation circled back to one person. Kael Ashborne. The boy who had touched the Stone of Awakening... ...and received no wolf. Yet somehow, the sacred stone had cracked. Kael walked home with his mother in silence. The narrow path through the forest seemed colder than usual, and even the night creatures had fallen strangely quiet. Elara finally broke the silence. "Kael." He didn't answer. She rested a gentle hand on his shoulder. "I know what everyone is saying." "They're right," he muttered. "I failed." "No." He looked at her. "You did not fail. Something happened tonight that no one understands." Kael remembered the voice. The last heir has awakened. It still echoed faintly inside his mind. He wanted to tell his mother. But what if she thought he had imagined it? Or worse... What if she believed he was losing his mind? "I just need some sleep," he said. She studied him for a moment before nodding. "Sleep, then. Tomorrow will be another day." But neither of them believed it. The next morning, the village buzzed with rumours. Some claimed Kael had been cursed before birth. Others insisted the Moon Goddess herself had rejected him. Children pointed as he walked past. Adults fell silent whenever he approached. A group of young warriors blocked his path near the training grounds. Their leader, Rylan—the Alpha's arrogant son—folded his arms across his broad chest. "So the ghost finally came outside." The others laughed. Kael kept walking. Rylan stepped in front of him again. "I asked you something." "You didn't ask anything." The smile vanished from Rylan's face. "You embarrassed our pack." "I embarrassed no one." "You broke the sacred stone!" "I didn't touch it any differently than anyone else." Rylan shoved him. "You expect us to believe that?" Kael stumbled back but stayed on his feet. Around them, villagers gathered to watch. "Fight him!" "Show us what a wolfless pup can do!" Kael clenched his fists. He had spent years learning to ignore insults. But today... Today they burned deeper. Rylan lunged. His fist shot toward Kael's face. Instinct took over. Kael twisted aside. Rylan missed. Before anyone realised what had happened, Kael had swept Rylan's legs from beneath him. The Alpha's son crashed into the dirt. Silence. Rylan stared up in disbelief. Then fury twisted his features. His eyes flashed golden. Bones cracked. Muscles expanded. In seconds, he had partially shifted, long claws extending from his fingers. Gasps rippled through the crowd. "He shifted!" "Kael can't fight that!" Rylan grinned. "Let's see how brave you are now." Kael knew he should run. A human could never defeat a shifted wolf. Yet... Something stirred inside him. Not a growl. Not a wolf. Something older. A strange warmth spread through his veins. For the briefest moment, his eyes reflected silver instead of brown. Rylan froze. "What...?" The warmth vanished as quickly as it had come. Kael blinked. Did that really happen? Before Rylan could attack again, a commanding voice thundered across the square. "Enough!" Alpha Magnus strode between them. His gaze swept over the crowd before settling on Kael. "My son has disgraced himself," the Alpha said coldly. Rylan lowered his head. "But you..." Magnus continued, staring at Kael. "Come with me." Kael frowned. "Why?" "Because there are questions only you can answer." "I don't have a crackswers." "Perhaps not." Magnus's expression darkened. "But someone—or something—does." Far beyond Moonfang territory, hidden beneath a mountain that had been forgotten by history, ancient chains rattled in the darkness. The crimson-eyed figure rose from a throne carved out of black stone. Dust fell from his shoulders as though he had slept for centuries. He smiled. "The seal weakens." A hooded servant knelt before him. "My King... shall we begin the hunt?" The ancient ruler looked toward the distant moon. "No." His voice echoed through the cavern. "The boy will come to me." He lifted one hand. The air trembled with dark power. "And when he does..." "...the world of wolves will never be the same."
