Lessons of the Shadow Dragon
The Hidden Village buried its dead beneath the ancient moon trees.
No songs were sung.
No voices broke the silence.
The attack had left wounds that no healer could mend. Although the assassin had failed to kill Lyria, fear now lived within every home. If one enemy could slip through their defenses, what hope would they have against the Shadow King?
When the final prayer ended, the High Elder approached Lyria.
"The dragon is waiting."
She looked toward the cliffs overlooking the village.
The Shadow Dragon stood alone beneath the morning sky, its silver scales glistening as the first rays of sunlight touched them.
Lyria climbed the narrow path until she reached the cliff.
The dragon turned its massive head toward her.
Its ancient eyes studied her quietly before it lowered itself onto the ground.
Lyria placed a hand against its forehead.
"I failed."
The dragon released a soft rumble.
"I couldn't protect everyone."
Tears gathered in her eyes.
"They died because I wasn't strong enough."
The dragon slowly shook its head.
A gentle pulse of silver light spread from its scales into Lyria's hand.
Warmth filled her body.
For the first time since the attack, the pain in her heart eased.
The High Elder stopped a few steps behind her.
"The dragon does not blame you."
"It is reminding you of something."
Lyria looked back at him.
"What?"
"The Queen of the Moon was never meant to carry the world alone."
She lowered her gaze.
"Then why do I feel as though every life lost is my responsibility?"
"Because your heart is kind."
The elder smiled sadly.
"But kindness without strength cannot protect those you love."
He pointed toward the open valley.
"The Shadow King grows stronger every day."
"You must master the power sleeping inside you."
Lyria nodded.
"I'll do whatever it takes."
The elder stepped back.
"Then your first teacher awaits."
He looked at the Shadow Dragon.
The great beast spread its enormous wings and leaped from the cliff.
Lyria stared in surprise.
The dragon circled above her before landing several hundred feet away in a wide clearing surrounded by ancient stones.
She hurried after it.
As soon as she entered the clearing, the dragon struck the ground with its tail.
Silver energy erupted from the earth, forming glowing circles around Lyria.
The air itself seemed alive.
The dragon released a low growl.
Lyria understood.
It wanted her to use her Luna power.
She closed her eyes.
The crescent mark on her wrist began
