The Midnight Assault
A cold wind swept through the Hidden Village.
The moon disappeared behind thick clouds, leaving the valley wrapped in darkness. The only sounds were the crackling of dying campfires and the distant calls of the night watch.
Kael stood on the western watchtower, unable to sleep.
Something felt wrong.
The forest below was too quiet.
Even the insects had fallen silent.
Beside the temple, the Shadow Dragon suddenly lifted its head. Its silver eyes narrowed as it stared into the darkness beyond the trees.
A deep growl rumbled from its chest.
Kael's heart sank.
He knew that sound.
The enemy was here.
A horn blast shattered the silence.
Before another warning could be sounded, a rain of black arrows fell from the sky.
The first watchtower erupted in flames.
Warriors cried out as they tumbled from the burning platform.
"Enemy attack!" Ronan shouted.
The peaceful village exploded into chaos.
Shadow warriors poured from every direction, climbing over walls and breaking through the wooden gates. They moved like living darkness, cutting down anyone who stood in their path.
Mothers grabbed their children and fled toward the temple.
Elders struggled to keep up as panic spread through the streets.
Kael shifted into his massive black wolf and launched himself into the middle of the battlefield.
His claws tore through the front line, sending shadow soldiers crashing into the ground.
Eryx and Garrick rallied the allied warriors behind him.
"Protect the civilians!"
The battle spread through every corner of the village.
Lyria hurried from the healer's cottage as frightened children ran past her in tears.
A little boy stumbled and fell in the middle of the road.
A shadow warrior raised its sword.
Before the blade could fall, Lyria thrust out her hand.
A burst of silver light slammed into the creature, throwing it backward before it dissolved into black ash.
She pulled the child into her arms.
"Run to the temple. Don't stop."
The boy nodded through his tears and ran.
Another explosion shook the village.
One of the cottages collapsed, trapping several people beneath burning beams.
Without hesitation, Lyria rushed toward them.
Villagers worked together to lift the heavy wood, but it refused to move.
Lyria placed both hands on the beam.
The crescent mark on her wrist began to glow.
Silver light flowed through the broken timber.
The beam became lighter, allowing everyone to lift it free.
Several wounded villagers crawled out alive.
"Thank you, Your Majesty," an old man whispered.
Lyria barely had time to respond.
A monstrous roar echoed across the battlefield.
Everyone looked toward the northern gate.
A giant beast made entirely of black stone smashed through the walls, crushing defenders beneath its enormous feet.
Its glowing red eyes searched the battlefield until they settled on Lyria.
Then it changed.
Kael saw it.
"No!"
He sprinted across the battlefield, cutting through every enemy in his path.
The creature raised a massive fist.
Before it could strike, the Shadow Dragon crashed into it from above.
The impact shook the entire valley.
Dragon and beast tumbled across the ground, tearing through trees as they fought with terrifying force.
Silver flames clashed against waves of darkness.
The sky itself seemed to tremble.
Meanwhile, more shadow warriors flooded into the village.
Despite the allied packs fighting bravely, they were being overwhelmed.
Ronan fought beside Garrick, both covered in blood and dust.
"We can't hold them much longer!" Garrick shouted.
Kael looked around.
Homes were burning.
Warriors were falling.
Children cried for parents who would never answer.
The Hidden Village was dying.
He clenched his sword until his knuckles turned white.
"Retreat to the temple!" he ordered.
"We make our final stand there!"
The surviving warriors slowly fell back, forming a shield around the remaining villagers.
Step by step, they retreated while the enemy closed in from every side.
High above the battlefield, hidden among the storm clouds, the Shadow King watched without moving.
His golden eyes reflected the flames consuming the village.
A faint smile crossed his face.
"This is only the beginning."
Behind him, thousands more shadow soldiers waited in silence.
He had sent only a fraction of his army.
The true invasion had not even begun.
As the temple doors closed behind the last survivors, the sound of pounding footsteps echoed outside.
The enemy had surrounded them.
There was nowhere left to run.
