Our parents hugged both of us. The fire was finally under control and they managed to put it out. The police captain came to talk with our parents. They left us and went to talk with him. April looked really horrified.
"What is it? What happened? Are you ok April?"
She didn't hear my questions and kept staring at the house. I nudged her and she broke from her trance.
"April!! What is it?"
"N.. Nothing."
Her eyes told a different story. I saw a river of emotions in them... I tried to console her.
"It's ok. We are fine. See? Don't worry. We will rebuild it. Only the top floor was affected."
Our parents came over and told us it was fine. The only damage the fire did was to the top floor. Our room was totally destroyed. So was our parents'. The fire trucks returned and The crowd dispersed. We spend that night in a nearby hotel.
Over the next few weeks, building up the house was the top priority. They dismantled the top floor and fixed it. Slowly it was rebuilt. We had to stay at our uncle's house during that period. Since all our books were destroyed in the fire, we had to take a few days off from school. Exams were nearing and we had to buy new school supplies.
Our house was rebuilt and we moved back in soon. After that incident, April seemed to be highly affected. She was shook by the incident. Not talking much nor being active like before. She even broke up with her boyfriend. We took her to see a psychologist. According to his instructions, we planned a trip so that it could give her a change of environment. We travelled to a nearby lake resort. We took a week off for vacation. Eventhough her mood seemed to lighten up a bit, that trip didn't seem to do much effect. She always seemed vigilant and scared. When I call her name, she seemed to be freaked out.
Our high school life was coming to an end. Prom, which was something we had been waiting for, for such a long time has not been able to lift her spirits. Soon it was time to go to college. According to the instruction from her psychologist, mom and dad decided to let her go abroad for studies. April agreed to this as soon as she heard it. With her brains, she managed to get into Harvard. The law school was what she chose. Our parents asked me to go with her to Harvard and I agreed with it. But one day April came to the room and sat beside me on my bed.
"June can I ask you something?"
"What is it sis? You can ask me whatever you want"
She hesitated for a moment.
"Do you love me?"
"Why would you ask that? of course I love you. Why wouldn't I?"
She stared at the floor and was silent for a few moments.
"I want to go to Harvard alone. Will you stay here with mom and dad?"
"But..."
"Please June..."
Her expression made me say yes. So she went to Harvard and I stayed back. When mom and dad asked me, I said I wanted to stay with them. I took up medicine in a college nearby our school. The first year she studied at Harvard went by happily. Her mood seemed to improve after going there. She used to call us almost every day and tell us about her classes and her friends. But as time went by, the call become less frequent. Then one day, they stopped altogether. My parents were panicked. We didn't know what happened to her. They even planned on going to her college to check on her. a few days later, a letter came from her.
'Dear mom, dad and June,
I am sorry that I am not calling you guys anymore. I am perfectly fine here. I know I should have called you to tell this. But I don't think I have the courage to do so. I think it's time for me to live independently.
I want to have my own life and I think you guys will be a burden to me. I love you guys and I will study hard. So please don't look for me again. Take care.
Love,
April. '
And with that, she walked out from our lives.
