Surprise...!!?

The rest of the week went by without much change. Same boring stuff over and over. Work, work and work again. Finally, Sunday came. Max had to go out of town for a meeting. So I called April to tell her to meet me at my home.
“Hey April? Can you come to my home?”
“What happened sis? Change of plans?”
“Max is not here. I can’t leave Coco alone.”
“Ok. Send me your address. I’ll be there by 3:00.”
She hung up.
I had to make dinner if she was coming over. I looked inside my fridge and realised I should go grocery shopping. I called Coco, put the leash on him and took him with me. He could use some exercise. I felt like he’s gaining some extra pounds. So we went to the near by shop and bought steak and some veggies. It’s not that often you get your sister to dine with you. So I thought steak out to be better. So I bought the necessities and on my way back, I bought a treat for Coco.
I know I’m the one who is feeding him so much. But I think he needs it. I should walk him more often. So that he won’t have any health problems. I set down the ingredients in the kitchen and went on cooking. Steak with some mashed potatoes and green bean salad ought to be the perfect combo. I arranged the table and while I was doing so, I heard the doorbell ring. It was too early for it to be April. When I opened the door, I saw Max standing there.
“Surprise!!….”
“Max?!! But what about your meeting. You told me you’ll be late. How?... “
“The meeting got cancelled honey. So I thought I’d surprise you. Here you go.”
I hadn’t noticed the bouquet in his hands. It was forget-me-nots.
Panic surged through me.
“Max!! Get them away...”
“What?!! What happened? Don’t you like them?”
I moved away from them.
“I’m…. I’m allergic to them.”
He saw my terrified expression and kept the bouquet away from me.
“I am sorry babe. I didn’t know. I’ll throw them away right now.”
He took the bouquet outside. After a while he came back.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were allergic to them. I wouldn’t have bought them in the first place if I knew. Sorry babe. Guess I ruined the surprise.”
“No you didn’t baby. You coming back now is surprising enough for me. Go and get changed. I’m making dinner.”
He went upstairs. Took a shower and came back. His hair was still damp. That made my heart skip a beat. He took a deep breath.
“Wow… you’re making steak? What’s the occasion.”
“I told you that I’m going to meet April today. Since you weren't here, I asked her to come over. She’s on her way now I guess.”
And just then the bell rang.
“There she is.”
I went to open the door to find my twin sister who may or may not have changed stand there with a gift wrapped bottle of wine.
She came and hugged me. Was that hug too tight? Or am I still making it up in my mind?
I hoped so.
After taking of her coat and introducing her to Max, we sat down on the sofa with April sitting opposite to me and Max sitting near me, his hands on my waist. As we started to talk, I heard a low growl coming behind the sofa where April sat. It was Coco. He was a friendly dog and never wary of strangers. But his growling was something…. Unnatural?
I’ve never heard that growl coming out of him. It lasted a minute and then he came out from behind the sofa. His eyes were planted on April. The next second, he yipped and jumped on top of her licking her face and neck. We were surprised by his odd behaviour. April was laughing trying to keep the energized dog out of her face. He acted as if seeing an old friend. But I’m pretty sure they hadn’t met. Max who was as surprised as me started laughing too.
“He seems to like you a lot. It’s like he has found an old friend.”
I had to get him off her by pulling his belt. He came the way I pulled him and sat near me. I guess he wanted to jump on her again as his stance seemed restless.
We continued our conversation. When April told that she was working as a lawyer based in London, Max’s eyes suddenly seemed to brighten up.
“You used to work in London?!”
“Yea. Didn’t my sister tell you?”
“No she forgot I guess.”
He peeked at me.
“ Why do you ask?”
“Cause I know you....”
