“Learned what you are? What does that mean?”
“Nothing. How have you been sis… ?”
“I’m doing fine. So Why did you come back after all these years?”
She took a sip of coffee. Her eyes seemed more cold to me. The warmth that I’ve felt when we were kids had somehow disappeared. We talked about things that happened here while she was away. She told me she had to come back due to her job. Her law firm had sent her to represent some corporate in this city. She would be staying here for six months and had thus taken an apartment nearby her office. I told her to come and live at my home. My boyfriend and I were the only ones staying there and our dog too. But she denied.
“It will be more easy if I were to stay nearby my office. That’ll make it more convenient to reach the office on time. Plus I don’t have to drive.”
“Ok. Suit yourself. So have you settled down or do u need my help to arrange stuff at your apartment?”
“No. I’m fine. So tell me about your boyfriend. How did you guys meet? Is he cute?”
She had a naughty smile on her face.
“Cut it out. You are talking about MY boyfriend for Pete’s sake. Yes he’s cute. As to how we met, that’s a long story.”
So I told her how I met my boyfriend.
I was working in the paediatric oncology section one day. The kids there liked me and often gave me small gifts they made. There was a young girl, 10 years old, who had leukaemia in its last stage. Even though the chemo had made her tired, her smile would brighten up the whole place. Even through the pain, she smiled and tried to make the other kids happy. Her name was Angela. Like her name, she was a real angel.
One day as I was passing by the ward, I saw a guy placing a bouquet of lilies on the table nearby her bed. Those lilies bought another smile to her face. He hugged her and kissed her on her head. I saw them laughing. The guy must have been telling jokes to her. As soon as she saw me, she ran towards me with a lily that she picked from the bouquet and gave it to me. That same angelic smile was on her face. The guy followed her out to the corridor. She introduced me to him. Turns out, that was her brother. He introduced himself as Max. Angela asked him to go buy her some drinks. He looked at me to check for my permission. I told him it’s ok to get a few without much additives. He asked me if I wanted to tag along. So I did.
As soon as we were out of ear shot of his sister, his bright face dimmed. He asked me how serious her condition was. I could tell from his face that he hasn’t slept for days.
“I haven’t seen you that often here. Only her mother seemed to stay with her.”
He answered in a tired voice.
“I was working in Mexico. I just came back yesterday. Mom didn’t tell me about her condition until recently. She said she didn’t want to make me anxious. When I knew about it, it was.... “
His voice broke off. I saw tears welling up. I told him not to worry. To make him feel better, I assured him there was a chance. But I knew that she didn’t have much time left. Her little body couldn’t take it anymore.
Unless there was a miracle.
