The morning light cut through the heavy curtains in thin lines.
I was still in the same clothes from last night when the door opened at exactly eight.
Anthonio stood there in a black suit, looking like the night had never touched him. His eyes moved over me once, then stopped on my face.
"You're up."
"I want to leave."
He stepped inside and closed the door. The soft click sounded final.
"No."
I stood. "You can't keep me here."
"I can." He pulled the curtains open. Green lawns. High stone walls. Black iron gates in the distance. "This is the Moretti estate. No one leaves without my say. Including you."
"So I'm a prisoner."
"You belong to me." He turned to look at me. "There's a small difference."
He picked up a black folder from the desk and placed it on the bed.
"House rules. Read them."
I opened it. The list was short and hard.
You do not leave the estate without me or Valerio.
You answer when I call.
You sleep in this room.
You do not lie to me.
At the bottom: Break any of these and there will be consequences.
I looked up. "And if I say no?"
"Then I will decide for you."
His voice stayed calm. That made it worse.
"You bought my body. Not my mind."
Something shifted in his eyes. Interest, maybe.
"Good," he said. "I don't need a doll."
Breakfast was quiet and heavy. He dismissed the staff and watched me across the long table for a long moment before speaking.
"Your father sold you because it was easy. Julian left you because you were no longer useful. Isabella will keep hurting you until there's nothing left." He set his cup down. "Tell me, Eleonora… what do you still get from protecting them?"
"They're my family."
"They were never your family. They were just another cage." His voice stayed soft but firm. "When a bridge only takes you back to fire, you burn it."
The words hit harder than I wanted them to.
He stood, walked around the table, and stopped beside my chair. His fingers brushed my hair away from my face. The touch was light, but it felt like a claim.
"I have a meeting in the city. Valerio will take you shopping. Buy what you need. The black card is in your name."
I looked up. "You're letting me leave?"
"With Valerio." His thumb touched my jaw for a second. "Don't make me regret it."
Then he was gone.
The shop smelled like money. Valerio waited near the door while a woman showed me dresses I barely looked at. My mind kept turning over Anthonio's words.
Burn the bridge.
I told myself I was only here because he ordered it. That none of this meant anything.
Then I saw the cufflinks under the glass. Matte black with a thin silver line. It was simple and sharp.
I could already see them on his wrist.
I stared longer than I should have.
"I'll take those," I said.
That was when the door opened.
Isabella's voice came first.
"Well. Look who it is."
She stood in a cream dress, my mother's sapphires at her throat. Bianca and Alessia flanked her like always. Their eyes moved over me, over the private room, over the black card in my hand.
Isabella's smile looked soft. That smile always scared me the most.
"Shopping already, big sister?" she said, walking closer, while lingering her eyes on the black card I had with me. "You have really gotten comfortable.
"Diavolo must be very happy with you. One night and he already gave you such a card."
Bianca laughed behind her hand. Alessia looked at the cufflinks.
"She's buying him a gift. How cute. And how cheap."
Isabella tilted her head with a cruel smile. "Trying to match him, Eleonora? Or do you just hope he'll keep you longer if you act like a good little w***e?"
The word landed like a slap. The saleswoman froze. Other people in the shop went quiet.
I forced my voice to stay steady. "Move, Isabella."
She stepped closer instead. Her voice dropped so only I could hear.
"He didn't save you. He collected you. The moment you stop being fun, he'll throw you away. Just like Julian. Just like Father."
Something in me pulled tight.
Before I could answer, the door opened again.
Valerio walked in.
He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. The air in the shop changed the moment his eyes found Isabella. He came straight to my side, took the wrapped cufflinks from the saleswoman, and placed a hand on my back. The touch was light, but it told everyone exactly who I belonged to right now.
Then he looked at Isabella.
"Miss Sterling. You have thirty seconds to leave. After that I will make one phone call. That call will end every invitation, every deal, and every favor your family still has in this city."
Isabella's face went white. Bianca and Alessia were already moving toward the door.
Isabella held his eyes for two more seconds, then turned. But she looked at me one last time.
"This isn't over," she whispered. "Not even close."
Everyone knew that all the accessory companies in Italy belonged to the Moretti's, this must have been the reason why the shopkeeper was scared when Valerio came into the building.
But I knew Isabella would be scheming after this.
The door closed behind them.
Valerio's hand stayed on my back. His phone was already in his other hand.
I stared at him for a second.
This him showing up at the exact right moment, the cold authority in his voice, the way he didn't even ask before stepping in this had Anthonio's fingerprints all over it. He was keeping tabs on me. Even from across the city.
I didn't know how to feel about that.
Valerio looked down at me. His face showed nothing.
"We need to leave. Now."
My heart kicked. "Why? What happened?"
His eyes moved to the street outside, then back to me.
"The men watching this shop are not reporters," he said quietly. "And they just started moving."
He guided me toward the back door as the first black car stopped at the curb.
