Chapter 4: A Bitter Proposal

As Claire climbed to the suite where Rudolf was waiting, her footsteps reverberated on the marble floor. The episode from the previous meeting with Lucas was replaying in her mind like a raging storm. Everything about him, including his words and eyes, had unnerved her and made her wonder if she wanted the answers. The luxury of the room did little to ease her anxiety when she pushed open the door. Rudolf, pacing like a restless predator, was bathed in the gentle glow of chandeliers. Lucas stood at the window, silhouetted against the city lights, while Mickey sat on the soft couch, his sneer as piercing as ever. The passion emanating from each man thickened the air. Rudolf wasted no time. "Sit, Claire." She stood with her arms folded. Her voice was sharp despite the internal turmoil; she shouted, "What is this about?" in a firm voice. Mickey laughed. "Direct and to the point. That appeals to me. With a quiet intensity in his eyes, Lucas stared at her without saying a word. The silence was broken by Rudolf. He ran a hand through his thinning hair and muttered, "We have a problem." "And the answer is you." Claire squinted her eyes. "Rudolf, I'm not a pawn in your designs. If Lucas is involved—"He is,” Rudolf cut in. "Lucas is willing to assist us. However, there are conditions. "Conditions?" Claire glanced at Lucas, who was unflappable. Rudolf paused, a look of unease flitting across his face. He's looking for authenticity. The marriage must appear genuine. Claire felt a knot in her stomach. "Is that true?" Mickey smirked more broadly as he leaned forward. "Calm down, my love. A few appearances in public, perhaps a kiss or two. Nothing is too much for you to handle. "Handle?" Claire's rage boiled to the surface as she raised her voice. She looked over at Rudolf. "You consented to this?" Rudolf's mouth clenched. "Claire, we have no other option. Lucas's assistance is essential. Without it…” Lucas's voice broke the tenseness. "It goes beyond appearances." Everybody looked at him. He took a step back from the window and stared at Claire. The purpose of this arrangement is not to show. Even if I'm just going to be with someone for a short time, I want to understand them. That calls for integrity, patience, and trust. Claire was unnerved by the seriousness of his tone and the weight of his comments. "Trust?" she repeated. "From someone planning a business deal under the guise of a marriage?" Lucas's gaze was serious, but his lips curled into a slight smile. "Trust is not bestowed; it is earned. However, honesty is the first step. I believe you have been missing something in your life. Rudolf snapped. "That's sufficient. Claire doesn't require instruction.” Ignoring him, Lucas remained focused. "This is your choice, Claire. I will not coerce you. But be aware that accepting this arrangement entails entering my universe. Loyalty is crucial in my environment.”. His comments hung thick in the air, and the room became silent. Claire's mind was racing. Devotion. That's exactly what Rudolf had been requesting from her for years. using her loyalty to his advantage. And now, Lucas What was it he wanted? What was she prepared to part with? At last, her voice was hardly audible above a whisper, "I need time." Rudolf became impatient. "Time? Claire, we are pressed for time! Lucas remained composed throughout. "She'll get it. This decision should not be made hastily. Mickey clasped his hands and stood up. "Well, I've enjoyed this. Let's not drag it out, though. Sleep on it, Claire, my love. And keep in mind... His voice trailed off to a whisper of conspiracy as he drew closer. "Loyalty has a cost." Rudolf became enraged as Mickey and Lucas departed. "Do you realize what's at stake?" He screamed angrily. "This is crucial for our future." Claire looked him in the eye with her rage simmering beneath the surface. "Our future? or yours? His face grew gloomy, but before he could answer, she turned and left, her steps solid despite the chaos within. The fresh air did little to calm Claire's jangled nerves as she strolled through the hotel's grounds that evening. The stars overhead appeared unconcerned with her situation, their far-off light providing no direction. "Claire." Lucas was standing a few paces away, his hands in his pockets, when she turned around. Despite his powerful appearance, she was surprised by the tenderness in his expression. "Are you unable to sleep?" he inquired. She wrapped her arms over herself and shook her head. "There's too much to consider." He took a step closer and nodded. "The choice is not simple." "Choice?" she sneered, her annoyance showing. "Not so much like a trap." Lucas's eyes grew softer. Claire, you're not confined. You underestimate your strength. You also deserve better than to be a pawn in someone else's game. The earnestness in his voice made her breath catch, but she immediately covered her weakness. "You're unfamiliar with me." "Not yet," he acknowledged. "But I'd like to." The sound of voices reached them before she could reply. When Lucas recognized Mickey's voice, he stiffened and narrowed his eyes. "Rudolf is becoming careless," Mickey said. "We'll handle it our way if he makes a mess of this." Lucas clenched his jaw and gestured for Claire to be silent. They approached the sound source, which was obscured by the garden's shadows. Claire's blood froze at what they heard next. She didn't recognize the voice that stated, "Claire's the key." She will lose Rudolf's leverage if she doesn't comply. He is, too. Mickey chuckled. "Don't be concerned. She will follow suit. They always do. Before they were found, Lucas put a touch on Claire's arm and led her away. He turned to her, his face gloomy, after they were well out of earshot. He stated, "This isn't just about a deal. It's a game. And you don't realize how high the stakes are." As his words sink, Claire's heart began to race. She was the prize, not merely a player in this charade. And she couldn't afford the price of losing. With the weight of the warning bearing down on her, the shadows appeared to deepen as she shut the door. Every step she took ahead seemed like stepping onto thin ice because the crossroads she faced were more dangerous than she had anticipated. The only thing she knew for sure was that her world was falling apart, and she didn't have much time to choose a side.
